For people subscribing for the first time, I'd recommend signing up as soon as the discount is live so that next year there's not much overlay in your subscription expiring and the discount going live again, and if you don't auto renew this year's sub you'd most likely be able to grab the discount next year too.

I haven't renewed in like 6 months so been waiting a long time for this

also OP should have provided this link to the announcement instead

So no discount on renewals/extensions for existing subscribers, just "upgrades". Eff that.

I re-upped last year around this time, so it's nice to see a "discount". That being said, I upgraded from Plus to Extra and was fine with that. Then a couple months later, there was a discount on top of that to turn the rest of the year Premium, so I upped it to that.

All in all, there are so many games that I didn't play over this past year, it wasn't worth the cost.

Honestly, this year, I'm going back down to Plus so I have access to the free games and online service.

$80 a year for online play and mostly junk monthly Essential titles, is a colossal rip.

I think subscriber base may fall off a cliff when everyone's previous stacking is up.

its not even clear they're going to offer $60 a year for essentials for existing? wt heck

One thing to think about with this logic is the Premium gives you cloud streaming. With it I was able to repurpose my NVME drive in the PS5 for a new computer build, but probably not the best use of money considering how cheap NVME drives are, just that a lot of PS5 games take quite a bit of memory if you are still on the 826 GB model.

Agreed. I'm actively looking forward to my sub ending and being done with this overly expensive service.
PC Gaming is the answer.

Getting my first PlayStation also on the 22nd just because of this subscription program, so let's say I'm going to sign up for this in two days, what's the trick to getting the discount next year?

Is there a time period Sony makes you wait before they give you discounts?

that's hilarious. Yeah pay 1500 for a card that won't even run new games flawlessly.

Ugh Sony did this last time, too. While it's great new customers get subscription discounts, it would be great if the loyal (current) subscribers would get either a better percentage or a percentage off their current subscription tier instead of requiring an upgrade.

I don't want to upgrade my tier, I'm fine with essentials. Please don't require current subscribers to upgrade their tier to get any sort of deal. I hate this tactic.
The thinking is that if you're a "loyal customer" already, you will keep on subscribing. They wouldn't need to give you discounts since you're a "loyal customer". Will you keep on subscribing if there were no discounts? By giving discounts to "new customers", it may entice them to try a service at a discounted rate to hook them to keep on subscribing at normal prices.

Genral question. (Not relevant)
So I am currently in US and I am from India. Can I buy a PS5 on black friday but purchase a PS plus from india using Indian Bank/cc as its way cheaper there?

I still just think it's greedy of them to put multiplayer games we have already paid full price for behind a paywall

Not to rain on anything or anyone but buying physical and not bothering with MP has made gaming very ensuring, sustainable and mine on my terms of infinite ownership. To hell with all the noise

Sucks for us current PS Essential subscribers who dont want to upgrade to the next tier.
Sucks for most current subs. Mine expires Jan 9th and I just upgraded from extra to premium for ~$4 last week. If I'm reading the terms correctly, I've screwed myself from any discount I might've gotten with this deal. If I waited, I could've upgraded from extra to pro with a 30% discount on the 22nd.

With the recent price hikes, this might be the 1st time since 2007 where I don't have an active ps+ subscription.

even if someone wanted to play mp, they can get by with playing free to play games like fortnite, warzone, etc without needing a subscription for online mp.

Can't tell if you're being serious or sarcastic….but I probably will renew just because I find the service to be decent (seems to be an unpopular opinion around here) and I do play multiplayer a decent amount with my friends and find the $7/month worth it to play with them and the decent selection of included monthly games.

I just like to complain about loyalty not being important to Sony (and honestly many other companies) - it's all about squeezing as much money out of the user base as possible.
Not being sarcastic but making a point. If you could sell a widget for $5 or $10, how much would you sell it for?

As a consumer you may not like paying $10 but that is another matter then "why" a company does not give current customers a discount.
