Got this and it works great, not sure why its so heavy though, surely not for moving around. Print quality is excellent. Setup was a breeze. I had previously used HP inkjet and this is my first laser.

I had a totally different experience. Setup was terrible (freezing during fax/scan driver/software install, spinning bars that never went anywhere, etc.) I had to kill the setup tasks multiple times and almost took it back based only on this experience. This was on Win11 btw.

The printer wouldn't print in color even when told to do so, until I updated the FW, then everything started working. The setup process was cumbersome and for such a large company, you wouldn't expect grammatical errors, etc. The aftermarket toners are expensive and you have to pull the chip out of your OEM toner and move it over to the aftermarket ones.

I would stay away from HP. They are not the same HP from a long time ago. I am going to take this printer back also because Canon has a cheaper model with similar features and the toner is less expensive aftermarket and no chip BS that I can see.

You also can not change some of the basic settings without entering the PIN code password on the printer. This isn't a bank vault...ridiculous. You also have to setup the WIFI by punching the info in on the little latency and lag ridden display. I have an older printer from 2017 and you can setup the WIFI settings FROM your PC and it sends that information to the printer...Crazy, I know.

Grammar issues during setup...
1. ...."This application must provide a simple UI for basic scanning..." WTH, This sounds like a scope document for the app requirements. Very weird.
2. .... "installed on a client or server PC that helps user fax a document...."

The whole unboxing and the first print took just 5 minutes. I just followed the instructions that came with the printer and I was able to complete the setup in minutes. I understand the aftermarket toners are expensive, isn't that the case with other brands as well?

I had the same impression too, haven't tried 3rd party toners yet. The old inkjet was crazy!

Purchased this printer in August from Costco and ended up returning it around a month later. The printer easily overheats and pauses printing for significant time. I even had a box fan blowing on it. Also, it threw errors and had to be restarted a few times. It was very disappointing. It was pretty easy to set up. I ended up having to revert to my HP Officejet 9015 as it printed more reliably and quickly. Not as good of quality as a laser of course, but I had jobs that I needed to get printed. I was also surprised at how quickly the toner ran out. I'm currently hunting for a new laser.

3rd party Canon toners are $20 each on Amazon. I got all 4 for $75 in a multipack (close to 5 stars and 1100+ reviews. I haven't used them yet FWIW. HP 3rd party toners are $60 each plus the chip removal/reinstall labor which is just a PITA.

I can see some replacement HP 218 toners without chip for $90 as well (4 pack), yeah the chip part is tricky, but I guess its doable.

Is there any particular Canon model that has constant success with these toners?

Pretty much getting to be the same with all Laser printers.

I have consistently heard that Brother does do any of that BS. That will be what I buy when my HP bites the dust.

I am not sure as I just switched to the Canon. I bought these [amazon.com]. I also got the 656 model for $280 on Amazon.

True. I recently got a relatively expensive brother. It's been flawless and super easy to use. I've had canon, HP, and Samsung in the semi recently past and all had problems. The brother has been a breeze...finally not having to do tech support and everyone in the family can easily print wirelessly from their phones, which ends up being most of what it gets used for, printing out medicals forms, school stuff, etc. Highly recommend brother.

The comment had nothing to do with the ease of use. I have owned Brother, Canon, HP, and a Dell Laser. None have required any technical expertise or support. It's a printer, you plug it in, hook up the USB, network, and print. Most of the time, these days you don't even need to load drivers for basic printing.
The comment was more about the practice of blocking aftermarket toners to force the use of genuine ones. And yes, Brother has started using chips in their cartridges as well, the last couple of years. Some aftermarkets work for a while, then don't, sometimes printer won't reset and keeps nagging about empty toner, etc.
