lol, yeah right. Can that Mac Studio M4 Ultra even run the types of applications that this processor is made for? Can the Mac take on the workstation GPUs (RTX X000) that would go along with this processor? How about the inference processors? Can it even be part of said environment? I don't see many Macs in industrial, engineering or architectural firms. Do you? Truth is, the computer is often the cheapest part of said environment, and they start at $10,000. Once you factor in the license keys, SANs, consulting and support fees, Macs don't play at this level. They're not a part of the conversation. The only place you'd find your Mac is at the entrance with the receptionist.

Do you people really think Thunderbolt 5 is really the fastest protocol that computers have to offer? People doing real work need closer, faster access to the CPU and that means direct PCiE connections, something Apple only offers in their Mac Pro lineup. But the problem with that is that Apple Silicon wasn't made to play with others. It's a closed system. This Threadripper and its EPYC cousin are the real deal. Mac Studio Super Ultra isn't it.
specialized needs and uses cases are the only worthwhile justifications for such monstrosities these days. slowly but surely Apple is encroaching on space usually belonging to high end workstations. oh, and this CPU is also for those who want bragging rights and more money than sense. but even if they wanted that, they should get the 7995WX.

All signs point to 9th gen Threadripper coming in January, so even if I were in the market I'd want a better discount.
people who need this are unlikely to care about the price, time is money for them

Agreed, 9xxx thread ripper is coming very soon. I'd be expecting this in the $2.5-$3k range in a few months..

No they aren't. Apple's greed is exactly what's holding them back. Their need to tightly control all aspect of the computing environment is why many businesses and engineering firms don't take them seriously. The only people I've seen using Macs in businesses are either developers or end users who requested them. That's it. They are edge products. And that's exactly where they'll stay because Apple doesn't give their users the ability to expand the system. Outside of the Mac Pro, you're limited to USB C and Thunderbolt5, which is a joke as far as expandability and speed is concerned. USB C and Thunderbolt are consumer-facing ports for docks and charging. And the Mac Pros don't benefit because of how Apple Silicon is designed. They're just not designed for serious speed or serious work.

As for who would purchase this CPU? Well, at this price level, you're either an enthusiast or this is a business decision. If it's the latter, then you know exactly where it's going to fit in your environment. This isn't something you'd buy at the mall. Truth be told, no business is going to buy a processor off Amazon unless they need to hoard them for spare parts. 99% go through system builders or consultants.

Sadly, must be water-cooled. Attached is my preferred AIO cooler for this chip.

Sad thing is, Mac Studio M4 Ultra is gonna smoke this thing in Single Core and be be closer than you'd expect in Multi-Core, all in the size of a small cake, running fairly quiet and cool, sipping power. For the price of this CPU alone.... for more and more people, it's making less and less sense to own a traditional high performance Windows/Linux desktop the size of a 2 year old kid with the associated noise that comes with said kid.

Unless you have very specialized workloads and an absolute need to swap parts, this is no longer the way to go.
When you have no idea what you're talking about and you don't know it. Lol.

Just by reading through the comments, many of you have no idea what this threadripper is for.

I want to drool but my nerd powers have fallen so low I don't even know what I would do with this.

Time to drink some blue milk, I guess, and wait to die.

Would it be better to have one server with a bunch of cores to have thinclients connect to and running various servers (homeassistant, plex, unraid, minecraft, satisfactory, ect.) , or dedicated machines for each of those in a rack?

Totally abandoned by AMD. If they supported this more and it was at a more attainable price point but with the lack of support on the gen 1, this is not worth it.
