The cost per cup is still very affordable at around 50 cents per 16 gram shot, so if you drink a cappuccino or two per day it's doable. If you've never tried it, and you have decent equipment, I'd recommend trying it at least once as a treat, maybe one of the smaller bags. It's like going from Walmart steak to A5 Wagyu.
What you want for espresso is fresh beans if you want crema. By fresh I mean 0-2 months old. The older the bean, the less crema you get. If you dont want crema, then older beans are fine and believe it or not, some people dont like crema. Its all matter of taste.
I find people who like bitter beers tend to like dark roasts. Dark roast covers up flavor and make the coffee a bit more bitter. This is why its used frequently at restaurants. A monkey can make espresso with dark roasts. This means the workers dont need much training and can pull shots faster since its harder to screw up.
Medium and light roasts are harder to work with and retain more of the bean flavors but you need to know what you are doing. More so, you need to love making your espresso. The lighter the roast, the more precise you need to be with your pull (grind size, temperature, taping, pull times, etc). Odds are, if you are starting, then you probably screw up many times while learning how to pull shots but thats how you learn.
If you see a $4 coupon for one time purchase, select it first, then switch to S&S and select that coupon too and subscribe. I ended up getting $7.69 w/max S&S. Oddly, one of the coupons changed to $3.69 instead of $4, but I received two coupon discounts. This worked once and both coupons still appeared when I went back, although only the S&S $4 coupon worked the second time, still it was only $11.29 which ain't too bad.
By the way, it's in the news that coffee is currently "skyrocketing". I've seen this type of story in the past, and it didn't really change that much, but you never know, maybe it will this time. It probably doesn't affect the larger sellers as much as it does local roasters.
