They definitely make less smoke than a campfire but with their double-wall construction they block a lot of radiant heat. If you're only in it for the aesthetics of the flame or to roast a few marshmallows they're great but you have to be right over them to feel any good warmth.
You're better off finding an old washing machine tub. Those things rock and don't smoke either.

Check the size! In this case XL means EXTRA LITTLE!
