Leno returned to 11:30pm time slot

NBC Shakeup -- Jay Leno Comes Out on Top [tmz.com]

Quote :
We've learned Jay's 10:00 PM show will go on hiatus February 1. After the Olympics, Jay will take back his 11:30 PM time slot. What has not been decided -- whether Jay's show will be a half hour, followed by Conan, or whether Jay's show will be an hour and NBC says sayonara to Mr. O'Brien.

We're told Jay and Conan have both been told of the changes. As for Jay, interestingly, he'll get what he always wanted -- his 11:30 PM time slot.
No words on what will happen to Conan and Fallon... whether they both will get pushed back one hour of if one of them will be fired.

I prefer Leno at 11:30 than 10:00.

I never denied that he was #1, but I lament that people seem to think that ratings is correlated to being the best. I don't think that way at all. Anyone who does thinks that shows like American Idol is the "best" tv show. It just attracts the widest audience, that's all.

He does have an ego like any celebrity would. But I think Leno genuinely enjoys being a talk show host guy and of course he enjoys a live audience. (If he didn't, then he wouldn't do those Vegas gigs and instead just spend more time with his car collection.)

He absolutely loves it but his last venture away from The Tonight Show was a failure in every sense of the word. I can't see him going out on another limb when he can just continue to do stand up.

Leno plays right into the crowd that is too conservative for cutting edge humor and instead likes cheesy crap. He knows what it takes to get good ratings, he knows what it takes to be a good comedian, and he chose the former over the latter. He's a sellout.
Quote from beowulf7 :
That's your opinion that Leno is a sellout but it's a fact that he's #1 in ratings in what he does. Can't dispute facts. Those facts (ratings) bring in more $ for his employer, NBC (now part of Comcast).
When you get to the point of saying "that's your opinion," you prove you've got nuttin', especially when you resort to $$$ arguments favored by lapdog fan boys of backstabbers sales people.

Leno, being the world's best comedian, didn't have to suck as Tonight Show host.

You have no credibility in this thread if you think he is the world's best comedian. That's like saying that fish is the world's fastest sprinter.

True that cable ratings are less than network ratings in general for the mere fact that more people have access to network/broadcast channels than cable channels. But there are big hits like "Walking Dead" that blow away cable ratings. For a while, WWF/WWE did as well, but not sure about that anymore. Anyway, if we normalize cable ratings vs. network ratings, how is O'Brien compared to Leno?

WWE RAW right now averages about a 3.5 rating, with spikes as high as 4.5 but that's due to their Wrestlemania push.
In december, ratings dropped to around 2.8.

Conan has been on avg a 0.4 rating.

Standup comedian and talk show host require somewhat different talents, and several people who guest hosted the Tonight Show during the Johnny Carson years proved this. For example, Barbara Walters was usually better at it than Bill Cosby.

Have you ever seen Leno in concert? He's much better there than on his show.

Yes I have. Saying he is much better during a performance is like saying my shit smells much better than yours. In the end they both stink.

Yeah, if I were him, which I obviously am not, I'd just enjoy my car collection after the NBC contract is up next fall and spend weekends in Vegas doing stand-up.

I don't even know where to begin with what you said, so I'll just leave it at that.

Thanks for that info. So Leno is basically doubling [zap2it.com] OBrien's rating and even Fallon is beating O'Brien despite being on an hour later.

Exactly. That's why I was puzzled over "But there are big hits like "Walking Dead" that blow away cable ratings. " since it's on cable.

I didn't state that clearly. What I meant is that there are certain shows on cable TV that blow away the notion that cable TV can't compete with network (broadcast) TV. If "Walking Dead" could due to its popular content, why can't O'Brien? Confused Granted, more people have access to broadcast TV over cable, but not 2X as much. Yet Leno is kicking O'Brien's ass by 2X.

A rumor no more, it's now official: Leno out, Fallon in [cnn.com]. Say goodbye to Leno in Spring 2014 and hello to Fallon as the "Tonight Show" that will be moved back to NYC in Fall 2014.

It's currently the lead story on cnn.com.

The transition will occur immediately following the Winter Olympics. They will promote Fallon while they have the huge audience during the Olympics and then The Tonight Show w/Fallon will start in New York at that time.
