NBC Shakeup -- Jay Leno Comes Out on Top [tmz.com]

Quote :
We've learned Jay's 10:00 PM show will go on hiatus February 1. After the Olympics, Jay will take back his 11:30 PM time slot. What has not been decided -- whether Jay's show will be a half hour, followed by Conan, or whether Jay's show will be an hour and NBC says sayonara to Mr. O'Brien.

We're told Jay and Conan have both been told of the changes. As for Jay, interestingly, he'll get what he always wanted -- his 11:30 PM time slot.
No words on what will happen to Conan and Fallon... whether they both will get pushed back one hour of if one of them will be fired.

I prefer Leno at 11:30 than 10:00.

I haven't noticed that. Fallon's monologues have always been short compared to Letterman's and Leno's. That allows Fallon to squeeze in a 3rd guest before the musical act. I assume that once he takes over Lenos' job, he'll have to go w/ Leno's formula of a longer monologue and only 2 guests (plus the musical act).

I hope he keeps up the tradition of the funny headline news. I guess Jaywalking will be gone, unless it's awkwardly renamed as Jimmywalking. Stick Out Tongue
They were actually talking about lengthening TTS and shortening Late Night to better fit BOTH of their styles (with Meyers doing more of a Weekend Update/Daily Show type of show in 30 mins).

Yeah, I just heard that on the radio this morning that Myer's "Late Night" will be SNL Weekend Update style. Also, it's curious that Lorne Michaels has his name and hands on SNL, Tonight Show, and Late Night. He wields a lot of power for NBC late night entertainment, for better or worse. It's currently unclear if Myer's will work with SNL while he does Late Night.

I know there are a lot of haters of Jay Leno here, but hate him or not, I think it's worth watching what will almost certainly be Jay Leno's last ever show as the host of the "Tonight Show" tonight.

Personally I think Seth has been the worst Weekend Update host yet. Am I the only one who notices that he constantly stumbles over his lines when all he is doing is reading from a cue card? I mean how can you be a late night talk show host if you can't even read a joke from a cue card? He doesn't seem to deliver those jokes right either. If I compare the other various talk show hosts delivering their jokes from cue cards to Seth, I think he looks like a rookie despite the fact that he has been doing it for 7 years... I think there are far more talented people on SNL but for some reason NBC just defaults to the Weekend update guy for Late Night.

Nobody wanted or expected Leno to fail when he started hosting the Tonight Show, but he's never risen above C- performance, except in the minds of tedious fan boys and business majors who see only ratings and not talent. I'm glad our long national nightmare with Leno is over.

yeah right, so says you. apparently you have a problem giving someone credit for well above your C- performance rating that has lasted in the biz for 20+ years.

nobody, even letterman didn't want leno to fail, right again, keep believing that

I don't think Seth Myers is great but I don't think he's horrible either as the Weekend Update guy. He has an odd style of delivery, I'll admit that. I wonder how he'll do with the Late Show. And I wonder who else will do the Weekend Update, unless they let the chick (Cicily something) run with it on her own.

I disagree. Leno's monologue is far superior to Letterman's. His bits, like Jaywalking, are also hilarious. The one fault Leno has is that he was a cat when it came to interviewing. He wouldn't get tough like Letterman would. (Letterman's interview w/ Madonna over a decade ago is probably the best in late night talk show history since I've been an adult.)

I DVR'd last night's episode and will watch it tonight. Too bad that this week, his musical guests were primarily country artists. Oh well, can't win them all! Not by you, but my most people, Leno will be missed.

They're not. They're full of jokes that everybody has already thought of (as evidenced by them being told a day earlier by Ferguson, Letterman, Conan, or Kimmel) or that are their rejects. I don't know if you've been to the show since I've mentioned this, but when I was in the audience at Leno's Tonight Show, the people didn't laugh much, and rumor is that the audience microphones are turned way up, both which can be noticed on TV.

Along with Headlines, that's about the only bit that works on his show, and Kimmel does it better.

Leno just doesn't care enough to do good interviews, which makes them about as good as those done by local TV morning shows interviewing celebrities.

As I said, Leno is the A+ student who chooses to do C- work, but that work appeals to the bland.

I've never attended Leno's show in person. The only late night show I've attended in person was Letterman's in 2009, which happened to be right after his infidelity scandal broke and there were news trucks there. A relative recently attended Leno's show (late Dec.); I'll ask him about the mic and lack of laughing comments you made.

I never cared for Kimmel much. He has some good skits he does, though, some of the stuff that winds up on YT. For example, when the Octomom story broke and he re-enacted the delivery of those babies. Hilarious. But his live stuff, not so much.

Well, we'll disagree; the majority disagrees with you. I know popularity doesn't always equal quality, but there's often a strong correlation.

His finale was very well done, classy, and Leno was obviously touched the way he pretty much lost his emotions. Like most in the country (if not in this thread), I'll miss Leno. I like Fallon and look forward to what he brings.

The debut of the "Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon" is going on right now. I'm recording it. I wonder if Fallon will be as nervous as he was some 5 years ago when he hosted "Late Night". I'll never forget that awkward interview he had with Robert DeNiro. laugh out loud He's got Will Smith and U2 tonight.
