They are way more fun with 12v batteries. Our 2.5yo wanted nothing to do with it until we doubled the speed.

Yeah, we had a different color model, but the motor doesn't care, which is typical.

My son did go through I think 3 sets of plastic gears when he would hit something and keep the button pushed. The little Walmart kart isn't designed for burn outs.

How does one upgrade the battery? is it as simple as going on ebay or amazon and buying the same battery style but as a 12V version of it?

yes, amazon has a million 12v batteries about the same size. For even more fun, you can hook up a 18v drill battery.
