Anyone wanting to "JAILBREAK" this don't spend all your time trying to input ADB code, you can if that's your thing but I would rather get to using this right away, download POJECTIVY LAUNCHER (https://play.google.com/store/app...n_US&pli=1). It does all the programming in the background so you don't have to. It's FREEMIUM Launcher available directly from the play store but well worth the $7-8 bucks to change wallpaper and extra features. It already makes the launcher the default screen when hitting the home button for free using accessibility permissions. If you want to take it to another level also get Button Mapper and change the buttons on the remote to open something else. Don't forget to click BUILD VERSION 5 times... Located in system > about to activate developer settings. Notable addons and mentions are obviously DOWNLOADER, MOONLIGHT REMOTE GAME STREAMING from PC, CX EXPLORER to sideload APKS via network, SMARtTUBE - zero add youtube app (28544 downloader code), STREMIO (with Premiumize. STAY AWAY from Real-debrid, they turned on their clients), Fosmon Mini Bluetooth Keyboard, & the TRENDnet 2.5G USB-C to RJ-45 Ethernet Adapter (Built in ethernet only does 100mb/s.) I have EVERY STREAMER from apple tv to nvidia shield (TUBE & PRO), roku, firesticks, and chromecasts.. This IS the best bang for buck android tv at this price as of 12/2024. New On version pending in 2025 to replace Google TV 4K Streaming Box - ONN 4k pro plus (- this version only has 2gb so still not an alternative for this): https://www.androidtv-guide.com/s...google-tv/
I bought this yesterday. I highly recommend the Launcher "Projectivy Launcher" to replace the default launcher. Removes all the ads and let's you customize your screen as much or as little as you want. Removes all the bloat from Google TV. You can download it from the app store.
10/100 is a reasonable cost-saving measure for a streaming device. 4K streaming only requires about 15-20 Mbps. 100 Mbps is plenty for streaming media over the internet or even over a LAN. The only time you'd get the benefits of gigabit is if you're downloading/transferring large files, which device isn't really designed to do and most people don't do often on their streaming devices.

I just upgraded my fire tv 4k original to the latest fire tv 4k, and the performance change wasn't much at all.

Going to return that and try this instead. If I can use a custom launcher and get rid of ads it'll be great.

Nvidia is not doing any more updates for the Shield? Just checked Shield reddit and it says nothing about this. Where did you get this info?
The last official update was 2.5 years ago. They recently released an unofficial hotfix to fix a couple broken things and keep the platform going a little longer, but Android TV is basically dead at this point. Everyone has moved to Google TV. The chipset (same as Nintendo Switch) is 10 years old and if there will ever be another Nvidia Shield, it will probably coincide with the release of the Switch's successor. However, Nvidia didn't really make any money with the Shield and they are making so much money with AI that I'd be surprised if they bothered to release another one.

Currently Android 12. Android 13 was been cancelled for all TV devices (13 was more of a tablet/phone release than a TV release), but 14 is an option and the Onn 4K Pro does fit the hardware criteria for version 14. If you find a aftermarket streaming box running Android 13, it's a developer release and more than likely very buggy. You will not get any security updates from Google with 13 on a TV device, you'll have to rely on the shady company that made your streaming box.

That's because there's really not that much difference between the two, except the Max uses WiFi 6E and a new enhanced Alexa remote.

I got the $20 version and it's able to play pirated movies and shows over Tailscale VPN and Jellyfin (when the app works...)

supposedly the same thing as the $50 Google version

Does anyone else have sound issues when playing Dolby Atmos? For the life of me, I can't seem to fix sound drops and static noises unless I set it to Never play surround sound option.

Bought this one for people concerned about remote . Yes it's the new one with backlight and freetv (Model 2438A, 2024 manufacturing) option anyway the box itself supports most functions thru my lg magic remote . DV works as expected both on streams and local media for local media VLC doesn't support DV use justplayer
Does this play or passthrough video files via USB with Atmos TrueHD audio? What about DTS? Some people are saying it doesn't. Can you play a video file and check? Thank you.

These have so many more capability than a Roku ultra or anything else that I'm aware of on the market at this price and I'm an Android power user so I guess I just fell in love and I bought four after the first one
Agreed. Now that these are in this price range, I avoid any firesticks as well, just to skip the hassle.

If you're ripping your own 4K Blu-rays, 100 Mbps is definitely not enough. I have discs that go over that with just the video, not even counting the audio and the rest of the overhead.
I was going to make a similar comment, except to also add that this is not an intended use case for this device, so the idea that 10/100Mbps Ethernet is enough is valid when you consider the engineers were targeting use cases like 4K Netflix or similar services where 100MBps is more than enough. Even a lot of remuxes will fit within that envelope. Not all, sure, but a good number.

Can anyone with this test under Kodi which types of audio codec/streams it can decode? I know the basic small one can't decode DTS audio. I'm wondering if this can. Thank you.
Kodi can do software decoding of DTS using FFmpeg and then output LPCM 5.1. Usually decoding audio isn't too taxing on the CPU compared to video, so even these underpowered devices can handle it without issue. Kodi can decode almost any codec you can name as long as FFmpeg has a decoder for it. The CPU will quickly become the bottleneck, however, especially with video formats. Audio is usually simple enough to be done in software with no noticeable issues, but no promises with some of the newer high bitrate formats that also may not have the greatest decoders yet. DD/DD+/DTS are all generally old enough the decoders are stable and highly optimized.

As others have said, while there hasn't been any official word from nVidia that the Shield is dead, it's been several years now since there was a hardware refresh of any kind, and software updates have become very infrequent. You have to sign up for a special "beta" version and that's mostly just installing the latest security fix update for the Android platform and maybe addressing a few other small things.

My personal guess is that the Shield was sacrificed on the altar of the failed ARM takeover bid, and now that their AI business has been more or less printing money, they've likely lost all interest in the Shield and reassigned all the engineers to other things. Even their "core" video card business has taken a back seat to their AI business. Supposedly there are plans for a 50xx series RTX card soonish, but before it was an annual cadence where now it's been a couple of years since the 40xx. You can't just blame the pandemic anymore for delays.

Maybe, assuming Nintendo is sticking with nVidia SoCs for their next console, nVidia will release a new Shield based on the same chip so they can piggyback orders. That's a pretty big maybe though. Ever since the Shield bombed as an Android gaming console, it's never really fit in nVidia's portfolio of products, and now they've started making GeForce Now clients for plenty of other platforms, so that isn't much of a selling point anymore, and GeForce Now is also kind of an oddity I wouldn't be surprised to see them drop or sell off in the future. Then the number of people who want a high end streaming device is probably relatively small. Most people will just walk into a Target or Walmart type store, see the $20 ONN device, and buy that. There's no consideration of the CPU or anything else about it, they only look at the price tag.

Ordered early on the 11th. On the 12th "Sorry your Walmart delivery is delayed." Whatever I can wait. Now today the a-holes have informed me that they "had to cancel your previously delayed Walmart order." No warning, no waiting, just erased it, along with the $5 Walmart cash and a $3 citi offer I used. Walmart will always and forever be a half-baked failure in their attempt to compete with Amazon.

I bought two of these at my local Walmart. They blow away the latest 4K Max Fire Stick. These are so zippy fast and smooth.

What is the jail breaking potential for this since it runs on Google OS? My JB FireStick is laggy and I'm looking for another inexpensive option.
It's android like the fire stick you can load any app you want. It has play services unlike the firestick so it's easier if the apps you're using are on the play store. It's all around a better device considering the loader can easily be changed to projectivy for an ad free experience.
