I like that IRS has introduced Direct E-File https://directfile.irs.gov/ They have expanded it this year. Last year it was available in limited states, but I think now all states are supported. However, it only supports fairly simple returns.

I'm probably just going to buy TurboTax again because that is what I am used to, and I have a somewhat complicated return, but I have two kids filing taxes for the first time this year. I may suggest them to try out the IRS direct file.

I don't want them to get hooked on TurboTax and be paying Intuit every year just to file taxes.

Can anyone confirm if the Turbotax state e-file fee is really $25 now? I thought the fee would be $20 before March 1, and starting on March 1, it would increase to $25. This is how it worked in past years, but I'm seeing a lot of references to a $25 state e-file fee in this thread.

Go here and click where it says state efile sold separately.

When I click on the link, I don't not qualify for the free, but do get 30% off. How do you actually get the downloaded version. I only see the online version. Thank you and sorry if repeat question.

Deluxe also import those items. Unfortunately, auto import does not ensure maximum tax savings. For example, the interest earned by FDLXX or TLT is almost entirely excluded from state income tax, but one must manually input the tax exemption portion into the program.
Do you have some other examples? It seems to me that DeLuxe imports the information, but then needs manual work? I wasn't aware of this.

Brokerage firms usually report stock transactions as first-in-first out. This may result in wash sale trades. I always manually check, then input all data.

Why dont you wait a few days (3?) and get it from Costco/Amazon? With the 25% off option which is what most people qualify for, the premier version is $78. You might get $20 off from Chase or Amex, or you might not, so the best possible price is $58 or likely price is $78. (Requirement for $20 off is to use affiliate link which negates the 25% off from Fidelity. So the $20 may or may not work).

With the Costco/Amazon deal coming up, it will be $68 from them, no hassle. Costco in addition, has a $10 credit from Turbotax, so if you use it, it will be $58, guaranteed, no hassle price.. The Costco price will start in a few days, so unless you need it now and cannot wait 3 days, it will be far easier and safer to get it from Costco,. Amazon usually price matches Costco at the sale date,
I'll be waiting until March to file and will keep tabs on the options. I meant to come across more as a worst-case scenario and that there's zero chance I'll use the online version of TT, or any other website or an "accountant." It's TT desktop downloadable for me.

It works exactly the same. There isn't much manual work to be done, except for the possibility of some bonds that are state tax exempt. Premiere and deluxe both handle this scenario equally poorly.

I know the page at https://turbotax.intuit.com/desktop-pricing/ says the state e-file fee is $25. But I'm wondering if this is really the current price or the price if filing on March 1 or later. In past years, the state e-file fee was $20 if a return was filed before March 1 and $25 on March 1 or later. I'm not clear if Intuit has increased the fee this year.

So if the current fee is really $25 now, then this might mean that they may increase the fee to $30 on March 1.

Why wouldn't you believe the website? Has TurboTax ever listed one price and charged less for anything? It doesn't say anything about increasing the price, so I assume it will stay the same. I personally haven't seen them change the state e-file fee for the download version in the past (only online overall charges, which they usually point out clearly to entice you to hurry up), but I also never pay the state e-file fee and I'm also always doing my taxes after 3/1, so I'm not the best to ask.

I never get this offer and I've had a large Fidelity account for years (use it for both 401k + individual). I'll keep looking but if nothing comes up Chase $20 + Fidelity 30% off may be the best option.

The amount doesn't matter; it's how many trades you execute. I believe it's 100 trades/year or so?

Nobody has been able to pin down any specific criteria. See Bogleheads thread where every proposed criteria gets disproven by someone who fits them but didn't get the offer. Fidelity doesn't say and the advisors don't really know (even if they do suggest something).
