I can't speak to the M12, but I personally own one of these and have bought a bunch of these for the guys at work, and they punch well above their weight.
Haven't had anything on my personal F-150 that it couldn't handle, and we use these doing fairly heavy fabrication for class 8 semi truck upfitting and they are powerful and light and as durable as anything else in this work environment

Looking for a good comparison of this and the new M12 stubby. Anyone care to chime in?

Used it for doing some rusty brake work and suspension work. One issue I ran into is space. I sold it and just bought the m12 stubby but haven't had a chance to use it yet. I also got the high torque that's been on sale this season so now I got all my bases covered between the two. If the stubby and the high torque don't work, only other thing that will is to melt it.

The new M12 stubby is pretty damn impressive. The Torque Test channel on YouTube did a deep dive on its performance and it outperforms the 40V Makita XGT at times.

Only with a specific battery (5Ah HO?) I believe, correct?

Correct - it only gets close to the 550ft/lbs with the 5.0HO and tapers off when you get into the 2.5HO and then regular XC batteries, but its still solidly better than the previous gen M12 stubby

So I bought the M12 Stubby, the Milwaukee Mid Torque, and the Dewalt DCF921 stubby. I ended up returning both the M12 and the DCF921. The mid torque is barely ~1in longer than both and with the 5.0HO battery, the M12 is about the same size as the DCF921.

If you were a mechanic and need to use this every day, I can see the value in the M12 stubby or the DCF921. As someone who's using these occasionally for just lug nuts, brakes, and occasional lags, the mid torque is more powerful while only being moderately larger.

If you work on cars a lot, then the M12. It's lighter and you can use your batteries with various M12 ratchets. This is perfectly paired with the new Insider ratchet (still waiting for a sale on that)

you'll get more power out of this and paired with forge for sure more power but really depends what type of work you're doing, even on speed one it removes lug nuts easily. I do believe the new m12 stubby is around the same without battery atleast at HD.

The new M12 compact w/ 550 ft-lbs plus the high torque M18 for 'everything else' is the 'ideal combination' I had in mind.

In addition to what everyone else is saying, one other consideration is overall work & battery capacity. The M18 batteries are going to have more stored energy and be able to do more work before needing a swap or recharge.
- M12 5AH (which is optimal for this tool) is a ~60Wh battery.
- The 'comparable' M18 6AH HO is ~108 Wh, almost twice as much capacity.
- M18 also has the 9 and 12 AH which are ~162 and ~216Wh respectively.

Obviously this comes with tradeoffs in size/weight - all just part of what you want to think about when deciding what to get. The M12 gets into way more spaces than this mid torque and the even bigger high torque. I'm probably waiting for the next gen for those after seeing what they did with the new M12. Even my Gen 1 M12 does my lug nuts fairly gracefully.

My bil is a semi diesel mechanic. He was a huge skeptic of the new M12. Let's just say he's not one anymore lol. Didn't think it would live up to the advertised specs, yet it totally has. It's an absolute monster for its size.

I recommend getting the high torque if you already have another small impact driver. The high torque can handle axle nuts with ease.

This is more powerful than the M12 v2 by about 15% according to torque test channel. The M12 is not even in the same category as this, obviously. It blows away everything in its category by close to 50%+ more torque.
