I bit on this, but SD really shows it's age. At least on paramount plus it's HD, but you got ads.

How do you expect to get a TV show in HD before HD existed?

This. I would love to know the science on how this is implemented.

Older movies and TV shows were recorded onto film stock. These can get later get rescanned into higher resolution video files:

Depends on how it was originally filmed. For example, just got Murder She Wrote in HD for $25. Looks great, but definitely old school TV, but since it was shot on 35m film it can be processed into HD 1080. Weird bit is I know a Blu-ray version/digital exists for Macgyver classic, I'm currently watching it on P+, so it stinks this isn't available in HD on Vudango.

if I had it to do over, I probably shouldn't have pulled the trigger on SD. If you're watching on your phone on a train commute or something it might be OK.

It should be noted too that the HD version of MacGyver, available on Blu-ray and Paramount+, looks particularly good for an HD remaster of a TV show from the time period.
