Thanks, needed a 5.1 receiver with updated video formats for my living room and this checks all the boxes.

Great for folks that are 100% sure they'll never need 7.2 or a 5.2.2 atmos config (have a separate room for serious movie watching).

Receivers like these are great for a 3.1.2 setup. With some decent speakers it's going to be better than most, if not all soundbars.

Wouldn't rear speakers be better than having 2 atmos ones? i.e. 5.1 vs 3.1.2?

Sure, if you can do that, but it's inconvenient (if not impossible) for many to set up rear surrounds. So if your living space only accommodates front speakers, this is the next best thing. That's why that configuration exists.

Bummed I missed out on the Denon X1700H deal a couple weeks ago, but hopefully this Onkyo will help sooth the burn. Can't imagine myself desperately wanting to go above 5.2 ever, so this should get the job done.

What was the Denon X1700H deal? Was it Costco clearing this out at $200?

I see two subwoofer outputs on the receiver. Are these meant to go to the same subwoofer or separate ones? I was wondering if this can do 3.2.2 as surround/side speakers are not practical for my setup.

It would appear to have outputs to two subwoofers. The only thing I see on the back panel that I don't care for is the "assignable" feature on the optical and coax inputs. Would rather they both be useable.

Have a 12-15 year old Onkyo 6.1 receiver. It came as a kit with speakers so not super high end. Would I gain any sound quality or features from this that would be worth it? Oh and setup would be like Roku to 10 year old 4K LG TV to receiver via optical.

I'm no expert and without knowing your current receiver it's hard to tell but I imagine if your current receiver is 12-15 yo, you'd get significant gains in image quality if your current (or future) tv can handle hdmi 2.1, earc, 4k @ 120hz, HDR+, and/or Dolby Vision. I just bought a new tv and my current Yamaha doesn't support any of those listed above. I tried a work around plugging my Roku direct to the tv and using optical cable for sound but sound quality was noticeably degraded. I reluctantly decided I should just go ahead and replace the receiver. $200 is a great price for what you get with this receiver and it appears to be decently future proof.

Pulled the trigger. Very happy for 200 clams. Shipped PDQ. My old setup had a microlag in dialogue just enough to bug me but gone now with this. The self calibration was really cool. Didn't have to do anything but hook up and now can control all power and sound from just my Roku remote. Was initially unimpressed with sound but I think it just took a bit to burn in maybe but sounded great at the end of first movie watched.
