while I have done my fair share of research in the last couple of years, I still haven't decided if it's wise to use one of these giant hard drives as a backup for my secondary backups of my old family photos, videos and other junk. (currently around 15TB of stuff... they are currently on the original media, two 10TB hard drives, on the cloud(both Google Drive and iCloud), as well as data Blu-ray discs.

My thinking is that I can NEVER have enough back-ups.(of back-ups of back-ups) because any one of them can and probably will fail several years down the road? Smilie

When big SSDs4TB or 8GB+ are cheap enough, I may also look into getting some of those as another form of back up?

By way of comparison of recent sales on external 20 TB drives, the WD Easystore was $250 on Black Friday and the WD Elements was $266 on Prime Day in the Fall.

That's a risk with the latest revelation, but it's not an official Barracuda and may be a HAMR drive. Hope I got an older drive from BB then, but not the end of the world if it's newer and Barracuda. It's not a drive I will keep running.

That happened to me in 2012, but I only lost 2010-2012. Now I've got two clouds and two disks with my photos.

I don't bother with RAID anymore. Once a disk fails, it's not better. And I plan for failures.

I used to do RAID 0 for a boot disk, but that's unnecessary with SSDs nowadays.

I'll bite on 20TB once it drops under $150. Then I'll get two and be and to migrate all of my current backups to one disk and a mirror.

fwiw I had every Seagate ~1tb drive fail. That is not deskstar boomer days. In the boomer days, Western Digital was garbage (caviar drives IIRC).
I have a working Seagate 1TB drive. Also, I don't ever remember a time when WD was considered garbage. Referring to the Caviar line doesn't exactly narrow it down. They used that name for their desktop drives for about 20 years.

I have always heard that low-end Seagate HDDs are actually pretty bad, even worst than the EasyStore WDs.
The ones that have lasted the longest for me have been WD, Segate fail sooner.
Am I being anecdotal, or is this the case?
