I own the 262pc version of this set and a 232pc Kobalt set. The tools themselves will hold up to anything MOST people will use them for. What sets the Craftsman set apart from the Kobalt set is the case. As many people have mentioned over the years, the Kobalt case drawers will jam if a rear socket pops up in the slightest. Frustration sets in when you need that drawer to open and it takes 5+ extra minutes to free it.
The Craftsman case isn't perfect, as it has a LOT of wasted space, but since it works flawlessly with Versastack/Tstak, and the drawers never jam, it's an easy choice for me.

Can anyone recommend a smaller set just for doing mechanic work at home?

Considering a Packout version of just the drawers for this is $200, get this if you want a good set and good storage. If you just want cheap go to harbor freight and pick up a cheap kit that will last you a few years

Just buy this one and take a tray with you when you are working at home. That's what I do and leave the box in the garage.

Is it a price thing? Because I know I'd want all the tools if I were at home needing it. Last thing you'll want is needing a size you don't have, or a deep version of a size you only have short, etc.

Kobalt has had some smaller sets for real cheap last couple weeks. Lifetime warranty too. They all been on SD. Search bar.

I bought this and returned it for a smaller set. I don't need a set of 12 point sockets that is a copy of my 6 point. A smaller, more portable, set for the same price is more convenient.

When you say mechanic work at home, do you mean working on cars? I wouldn't recommend anything smaller than this set if that's the case. However if you mean like handy work around the house you'd probably want a different set that's aimed at that.

These pop up for 99 bucks frequently in lowes.

I've got a few of these sets that i keep around at my mom's house, in law's, etc in addition to one i use myself frequently.

Yes its a lot of filler but it has all the important sizes and 3 sizes of ratchets. The filler will cover you with random bit\hex keys. The quality on the filler is garbage as to be expected, but the ratchet set themselves is good for the price. I wouldn't want to tear down a car from the 60s with it, but it will get you through your oil and brake changes, putting the kids bike together, general household stuff more than fine.

They also make a Bin box this thing stacks to, which is great for just tossing in any other rando tools you need.

The last set I purchased from Craftsman was absolute trash - The plastic box fell apart, the drawers would fall and scramble all the sockets and the ratchets are super weak - Broke my 3/8 with little effort. I'll buy Harbor Freight over anything Craftsman.

I'd call this a very good starter set. It's weirdly missing some intermediate bits and really doesn't deserve to say it's giving you 1/2" drive versatility.
The 1/4 drive :
Has 4-14mm standard and 4mm-12mm, but is missing the 11mm deep.
Has 5/32 to 9/16 standard, missing 13/32, 15/32, and 17/32. The deeps are mostly just the /16s. I don't know that I've ever used a 17/32 but I have used 13/32
The 3/8 drive has 10-19mm standard and 10, 12-15, and 17 deep. The missing deep sockets will be annoying.
SAE is 3/8-3/4 standard (no /32s) and 3/8-11/16 deep (no 3/4")
The 1/2 drive only has 18mm, 19mm, 21mm, 3/4", 13/16", and 7/8" standard sockets - and only 12 point version. That's deeply disappointing and you will be annoyed at having to switch ratchets just to use the 21mm or 3/4" deep. They might as well include them all as 3/8" and give you an adapter. It depends on what you're doing, but I regularly use 20mm-24mm, 1", 1 1/4" 6 point sockets for car stuff. I think lug nuts are usually 21mm and 13/16" - and so you don't even get those as all the 1/2" sockets are 12 point
I do find that I break (new) Craftsman regular sockets not infrequently on doing car repair with stubborn bolts, but that happens with most non-impact sockets. I feel like my Husky mechanic set from 15 years ago is more robust at a similar level of expected quality. I can't speak to the "Lifetime" warranty post Stanley takeover.

I'm seeing comments regarding downsizing, but what about this actual set? Worth the price?

Its worth the price, it covers the basic tools needed by a home owner or above. There is always a sale on some sort of tool set somewhere. You just need to commit to whichever quality set at a reasonable price you feel comfortable with.
