once you use a "magic" can opener with the safe cut method that just unseals the lid from the container without any cutting, you'll never go back to these

the problem is they are like $10 and mine breaks every year and have to buy another

this is what I mean but the price is too high

Good find. I bought one on a whim a year ago and it cuts open cans really well. Might as well get some spares now.

I have an OXO with the safe cut (which is more expensive than $10) and it's a bit of a PITA, to be honest. So, I wouldn't agree that once you use one of those safe cut designs, you'll never go back. I bought a USA made EZ-DUZ-IT, which is a copy of the classic Swing-A-Way design. It's made very well, and just much less fussy to use to open a can.

As an FYI - here's the USA made version for $12 [amazon.com].

You want the Kuhn Rikon safety can opener. Had it over a decade. Going strong.

I have an EZ-DUZ-IT but it has a carbon steel blade that rusts easily if not immediately and throughly dried after rinsing, just like those carbon steel knives. Due to its design, it has a lot of nooks and crannies which make it difficult to throughly dry the can opener.
I decided to buy this since it has a similar design and is made of stainless steel.

Can confirm, the OXO collects dust & will be thrown out soon,
I did in fact go back to the standard design.

These are crap the handle fills with water and they rust.
You don't get true stainless steel at this price just poorly plated junk.

Get a normal Swing-A-Way ideally an older one from a thrift store but the new ones are good enough.

I was literally just coming here to say this! Mine has to be at least 20 years old now. The brand stamp is starting to wear off, but that's about the only wear it has. I didn't pay a lot for it either, got it at Marshall's or TJMaxx I think.

I'm probably a monster but I just live with the rust. It's not harmful for a small amount to make it's way into your food and it hasn't rusted enough to impede the functionality of it can opening, not in the 8 years that I've used it. I just rinse it, give it a couple shakes and immediately throw it back into the drawer (in the open L position to give it the most airflow between the gears); I leave the airflow in the drawer to dry it. I have twice, de-rusted it by holding a scouring pad on the blade as I turned it and haven't noticed any pitting on the blade.

Growing up, we just had 1 can opener the whole time (yes it had a little surface rust as well). I'd rather have the rust than choose to buy a new can opener every year and live through it slowly failing.
