other method: keep 1 line active. once phone 1 unlocked, activate phone 2 on active line. wait 61 days then request unlock. rinse and repeat.
Thanks!
Have only had credit from in store trade so far and it showed as a charge and that the bill would go up next month, but when the bill generated yesterday it was gone and the amount due was back to zero.
Hard looking at the estimated bill with so much money on it, but so far it it working and apparently the same thing happened last year.
I just successfully did 2 in store upgrades on 2 lines that were previously blocked about 3 weeks ago after successive store upgrades. Here's the track record for those curious
2/8: free line upgraded Moto play to s25, added new line for iphone to s25+. 5 hours later upgraded free line again another Moto play to s25. Then was blocked from additional upgrades.
Decided to lay low for 3 weeks then went into a different store in NYC and upgraded again.
3/1: upgraded free line from s25 to s25+. Then upgraded the paid line from s25+ to s25 ultra.
Total count: 5 store upgrades across 2 lines over 3 weeks span.
Also considering your other questions for the 2024 Moto play phones (I have two of those as well!) I'm wondering the same thing, adding two new $20 lines or is there a way to upgrade the existing free and $20 line? From later comments it seems people are having trouble upgrading recently opened lines. Should they be left at the Samsung IMEI or should it be changed to a BYOD and then upgraded?
- went to Spectrum office yesterday without appointment, left with 2 new Galaxy S25 128GB base models for $234 total after about 20 minutes inside the store, trading in 2 locked tracfone 2023 Moto G Play phones from the QVC 2-pack deal.
- i have spectrum internet but have never used the free spectrum mobile line, so that first line was free and the employee was nice and waived the $20 activation fee on that. it's a free unlimited plan for 12 months.
- 2nd new s25 is on a "by the gig" $20 per month plan.
- i had brought 4 cheap phones (the 2 moto g play 2023 versions and 2 more moto g play 2024 versions) and was considering getting 4 new s25's and i discussed this with the employee, and the employee would have been happy to do it, but he wanted to bundle the lines all together on some other plan and i wasn't sure if that would mess up my plan to cancel the paid lines as soon as possible, so I just got the 2 for now.
- i might go back today or tomorrow to get 2 more s25's on 2 new separate $20/month "by the gig" lines, using the 2024 moto's as trade-in.
- but i am also wondering if i should try to go back in-person and upgrade the 2 s25's i got, to 2 new s25+, since that's really the best deal because you get money back from that trade-in, plus you get 2 new upgraded 256GB phones.
- they did require SSN and they scanned/photographed my driver license card. it must be for a credit check because the guy said "you have up to $15,000 in credit available" or something like that.
- i of course paid in full upfront and did not finance anything. he flipped around his screen at the end to show me the summary, and it was a touch screen with drop-downs where you could look at the details under each phone. there were some various fees/taxes for state and local stuff.
- $10 trade in value for each moto phone, plus the extra $700 each, so each new S25 cost $89.99 plus tax, and plus the $20 activation and $20 first month payment for the 2nd line. So $90 + $90 + $40 = $220 with the total sales tax being about $14 (it said the other taxes/fees were bundled into the monthly plan's cost). The 2 phones at $800 normally, plus about $64 taxeach at 8%, would have cost about $1,728 total.
- So I saved about $1,494 on the 2 phones or about 86%. Amazing deal, and thank you everyone for posting this and all the tips.
Edit to add: I am debating whether I should cancel the 2nd line ASAP and then try to activate the 2nd S25 on the free line in 2 months, after I've activated the 1st S25 on that line. I've read on here that you should be able to put the 2nd phone on the 1st free line, keep it active for 60 days there, and then unlock it, but I'm not sure if it's worth the hassle. I might just pay the extra $20 on the 2nd month of the 2nd line to make sure it activates. Although I really only need one of the phones, so if I can't get the 2nd or more phones to activate, I guess I could just trade them in still.I've heard people say that you should do 3 months just to be safe, but I believe in New York State here they will prorate the credit back to you for time remaining in the month when you cancel, so I think I would still only be out an extra $21 or $22 or so for the 2nd month and beginning of 3rd month.
