Multimeters have classically required that you set the meter both to the property you want to measure and the range you expect the measurement to fall within. Selecting too low of a range for the application yields an overload reading, selecting too high of a range reduces the number of significant figures of the measurement. An auto-ranging multimeter switches ranges automatically to provide the most detailed measurement it can without overloading.
-
Measuring current usually requires breaking the circuit under test and placing the multimeter into the circuit at the location you want to measure. Clamp meters can measure current without modifying the circuit, as long as you can get the clamp around a lead that you want to measure. Many clamp meters read only AC current this way; this meter can measure both AC and DC current via the clamp.

I've had this model for a few years and it's been fine. I don't care for the inverted display, and the auto-off timeout is too short, but otherwise I can't complain.

Had a Klein clamping meter (looks exactly like this) that I bought in 2018. Worked fine when I got it,. Then didn't need it until like 2021, when my AC went out. The capacity test function just yielded random values all over the place (it worked in 2018 because that's what I bought it for in the first place). I even put a brand new battery in. Went and bought another multimeter (different brand) which worked just fine. Needless to say I threw my Klein into the trash after only 3-4 brief uses...

I have some stuff from them, I dont recall if it was the clamp or not, but it was a meter and it has done just as good as any other for home electrical needs.

Of course none of this stuff is scientific instruments so hopefully nobody demands 0.01mv accuracy.

Just a heads up fwiw you can disable the auto-off timer on startup for situations that call for it

how is this comparing to Kaiweets KC604
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0CVXCFMLY

KC604 is just half of the price with extra discount. Same features and good reviews. Wondering what makes Klein twice the price.

Keep in mind models like these are not great for low current applications like parasitic draw in the low ma for a car.

Are you quite familiar with clamp meters or no? If not Let's start with your intended use case. What do you need to use it on, for etc and why/to what extent? Daily use? Parked in a drawer most of the time? What is the max voltage you'll be using it with and what current range do you need to be covered ? Are you sure you need a multimeter? For example does your use case benefit from a constant, current reading ? Because that's a possibility, you could rig up a little display that shows you real time current usage all the time, vs the meter which is more for single readings or troubleshooting etc and is filled with a bunch of features in the form of a full on multimeter that probes about a bakers dozen different types of readings in Addition to dc current.

Are you looking to use on applications with single or tens/hundreds of milliampere or fractions of a milliamp or between .5 amps and 10 amps? Dozens? Hundreds of amps?

TLDR A low and high end current range would be helpful as well as the use case for making suggestions. And if you're an electrical engineer that wanted nothing answered but the exact question you asked…we can just pretend this exchange never occurred. 😜

Just 12v stuff mostly, not daily use, redoing a trailer.

If you get this (which you should I have it and it's my go-to multimeter on projects, although I grab a smaller one for one-off readings) grab the AC power splitter thingy that lets you get a clamp off a live circuit without isolating the live wire (clamping the whole cable otherwise will cancel out your readings).
