Just picked up an open box for 330. Heck of a deal!
It's the Extreme version, and still the best chipset in the handhelds on market as the Z2 Extreme isn't out in anything yet despite being around the corner. I think this is a great price for where we are, and $199 should be the non-Extreme version price, or whatever cost is so they can unload them for the new models. Anyways, this thing is great and only has several downsides, the battery being the biggest issue along with cooked sd card reader, memory pool, and not using hall sticks (they are still good though), a good deal at this price to use and see if you would actually use one before spending more on a handheld. TU
I picked this up last time it was FP. I'm happy with it! The battery life is a the only minus. I get about 1.5 hours on a modern 2D game, and about the same streaming from my PC. Build quality is nice. I like the sticks. I heard the SD card slot is still a big problem (melting down!) so I've avoided using it. Although the USB 3 works great for add-on storage.
If you need Windows this is a no brainer for the price. Otherwise hold out for a referb Steam Deck. IMO.

Edit...
The case is a nice touch. Feels/looks premium for a freebie.

Wait til switch 2 and steam deck 2 gets released. The price for them is going to tank too. Should we call them junk because of price drop?
The price started dropping on these crappy Asus handhelds the minute they came out, it has nothing to do with a new model.

and there wont be a Steam Deck 2 for like another 10 years. Valve has already said so

Because those with OLED is more expensive and SteamDeck which is the real competitor to this in this price range doesn't have VRR and runs at lower resolution. So it comes down to trade-off, unless you're willing to buy a Lenovo handheld which also cost more. I'm not...
I think the lower resolution is fine for the size. Just saying for MSRP of this - it's lacking imo. 450 seems more like normal price. So under 400 would be a deal.

I'll keep waiting. I'm budgeting like 500-1K depending on specs. But seems like they all lack a little something whether no oled, resolution, small battery etc.

Perhaps. I felt they were overpriced too, but honestly looking at everything, sub-$500 isn't very much these days. We used to be able to get a decent gaming PC for $500. Today, that's closer to the cost of the GPU. With tariffs, these things are likely to go up in price to boot or they sell out. It's not like there's a competitor in this price range.

That said, if you really want low price, there's open box (or used) options at Best Buy for the low $300s. Some of them are just customers getting them expecting console like experience, and getting Windows experience without keyboard/mouse on a tiny screen and thus returning them. 🤣

The overall combined market for handheld seems small too. Apparently, they sell around 2 million total annually including SteamDeck's that take about 50% of the sales.

I think the word junk is really subjective. There is even an idiom saying "One man's trash is another man's treasure" . So to spout that this is useless is just wrong. Like a lot of people here $330 dollars for a handheld I can use to play stuff laying down or away from my desk is super useful. Then docking it as a media console is super useful for me. Traveling and using to remote is super useful. For $330 bucks I can't think of a device that can play emulators, steam games, epic games store, windows games, etc, competently. This handheld is definitely not exceptional at one thing. After using it for a bit it lacks in out the box ease of use, small battery, bugs with Asus and windows. But they have work arounds aren't deal breakers for how many advantages I can see for me. So perception is everything. What I'd tell someone about the ROG Ally Z1 is, if you like building PCs and want to tinker while having lots of options go for it. Want an out the box but limited library go Steam Deck or Switch. For me the deck makes no sense since I can just play on my desktop. I wanted something to replace my heavy laptop with a A3000 in it with all the functions of a laptop. Voila, cheap Ally Z1 with much lower power draw than my laptop.

I would say Steam Deck for the support of the community and Valve customer service.

The Rog has more horses under the hood, but the overall user experience, mods, support, community, and battery life are not as good as the Deck.

I own both and prefer the Deck.

Back to regular price; however, these discounts are frequent. Wait a few weeks and it should come back, I hope lol
