I bought one of these last night from Best Buy while it was $100 off (making it $549.99). Checked again this morning and it's now $150 off for the Z1 Extreme model. I think this is the cheapest it's been for those of us who don't have Plus or Total Memberships.

It should be noted that this deal also (as of 1/8) comes with a free travel case and 4 months of Xbox Game Pass Ultimate. The device itself comes with 3 months that you can redeem when you launch it, plus Best Buy sends you a code for 1 extra month.

The legion go s uses z2 go processor which seems to be more closer to steam deck amd processor. This one has z1 extreme which is likely faster.

But again, those are just early information. We will need real benchmark to make any judgement.

I've owned this, legion go, and now a steam deck. I really like the steam deck. It's a great user experience. Everything feels "right". It's also the most comfortable of the three by far. Although, with the right case, the ROG Ally can be great to hold for extended periods of time. If you have game pass and would like a desktop experience on the go, I would go for this.

I bought the Ally X for my son for Christmas. Right out of the box, it felt like it came from Wish. Windows was so unbelievably buggy and clunky. After windows updated, it basically soft locked my device. It was so slow it took 15 minutes to turn off some setting to make it run again.
Regardless of that, the unit never knew if it wanted to run in gamepad mode or desktop mode. Applications would crash constantly. Slime Rancher results in a frozen black screen every time you loaded it. Emu controls were a mess. Charging it results in it turning into a strobe light. It would turn off/on all night long. Sleep mode never worked, it would turn on by itself. It would log me out of windows constantly closing all my apps. Touch screen unresponsive very often. If you turned the screen off, it would die in 2 hours. It would also die in an hour playing Roblox from full battery. Roblox constantly had errors logging you out. Navigating windows was a nightmare. And it would randomly turn itself completely off constantly. This was all happening running retro Nintendo emus, slime rancher, Stardew Valley, and Roblox. No high resource games.

I ordered a Steam Deck. I am awaiting it's arrival. From what I've read, SteamOS is build specifically for the device so it is much more seemeless. Just sharing my experience. Maybe mine was defective.
What part of it felt cheap? I've had this version and the X, but never had any of those issues. Many of the ones you listed as issues are just options you turn off/on in settings. It's nearly impossible to kill the battery in 1hr even at the full 25w mode. I'm frequently on the subreddits and FB group and have not seen anything resembling your experience. Some of it might be a lemon issue, but some of this is a user problem too. The SteamDeck is probably easier for people who don't care to go into some settings to change a couple of things around and get scared of one bad unit. You could have just exchanged it. Good luck with the SD

Hmm, mine worked great. And smooth. I also avoided the micro sd card. I docked it in tv and used Xbox controllers. Minecraft initially was choppy but turns out bc of nvidia ray tracing. I used others and was fine. Used the cloud to renew windows, it's like the version made for ally.

Sam's Club had this for $379 over the holidays... I know because I bought one. It's a great unit, even if it's not the higher-end "X" model that has more ram and a larger battery (both have the same processor). You can dual boot and setup Bazzite OS, giving it the same functionality as a Steam Deck with the option to boot into Windows and runs those games, instead. It's basically the best all-around handheld available right now.

I just installed bazzite on rog ally. Get steamOS but on ally hardware. Sleep/wake works wonderfully and none of the windows issues. No game pass is the only negative.

"User Problem"

That made me laugh. That is what I tell my Grandpa when he is having tech issues. He will blame it on anything but himself when 9/10, it's a user issue 😃

it's 12 CU on Z2 Go vs 8 CU on Steam Deck. Yes, the Z1 has higher core count CPU than Z2 Go however in practice games are almost never CPU bound on these devices.

I agree wait for benchmarks. So much of the user experience actually comes down to energy efficiency which is why Steam Deck has done so well when it is on paper weaker than all these recent competitors.

Well, Roblox achieved the impossible then, less then 60 minutes 100% to completely dead. The OS running felt like it was a knock off OS a Chinese Manufacturer created. No complaints on build quality.
I am unsure what settings would resolve games crashing every time you load them. A 10+ year old game would soft lock the device every time it loaded. Stardew Valley lagged the whole time I played it and would result in a black screen or windows just exiting it completely for no reason. The constant logging out and shutting down, what setting would resolve that? Also, the screen constantly flashing and the joystick lights turning off/on while charging all night what setting is that?
It was quite literally the worst piece of tech I have ever purchased. I was convinced it was a fault device but I didn't want to exchange it incase it wasn't.
I really shouldn't be replying, but you ignored half my post. The "OS is Chinese manufactured" tells me everything I need to know about your understanding. It's good to know Windows 11 is "Chinese manufactured." If you are talking about the application "Armory Crate," it is very straightforward. Everything is labeled. You can look around at all the settings or watch a YouTube video if you struggle with reading the labels or just flat-out refuse to explore. It sounds like you had a bad unit and are incredibly biased at this point. Like I said, some of it sounds like a bad unit, maybe some software, and some of it is just you. You have a hard time accepting that. The LED light settings are in the...I know this may sound difficult, but follow me here: In the "OS" Armory Crate - Settings (the gear icon) > Lighting. I know that was hard to find. I had to dig deep and navigate some awful labels to find it! Good luck with the Steam Deck. I could sit here and answer your questions all day, but in all reality, you have already made up your mind. You don't have to reply so I won't be tempted to reply. Have a good one Smilie

Edit: The black screen issue is actually a known issue on what seems to be a small, but still significant amount of units exclusively on the X. An exchange/RMA has a good chance of ridding the issue.

I said it "felt like" a knock off OS. Because Windows 11 on a handheld ran terribly for me. Laggy as hell. Very hard to navigate with a touch screen and buttons. And of course, the OS has no idea it's running on a handheld. It thinks it's a computer. Which caused a major issue for me, the device never knew if it should be in Desktop or GamePad mode and frequently switched between them mid game. Constantly.
I shut off the joystick lights in Armory Crate. They still flashed while charging, all night. Every 1-6 minutes the screen would light up and the joystick lights would start tweaking. I'd wake up to a device fully lit up and logged into Windows.
A device shouldn't need a RMA out of the box. If a $500 MSRP "gaming" device can't run a 10 year old game out of the box yeah that will start to create a bias. Add that on it being hardly able to function for longer than 20 minutes, I believe that would make up most peoples minds.
