I really wish Google would just go ahead and implement a feature on Android that would allow ANY Android device to update the location of a tag, much like Apple does with their airtags. t's next to useless in my eyes considering only a quarter of people in the US actually have a Samsung device versus Apple users at 60%.

Bumping it up from 25% to 40% by implementing some sort of ability to update a 'Google Tag' would make an android based tag much more feasible...

These things are fantastic, particularly if you have a Plus or Ultra model phone with UWB. I was concerned about the network coverage originally, but I leave one attached to a bike outside, and it gets location updates pretty regularly when somebody with a Samsung phone walks by. Battery life on the 2nd Gen devices is hugely improved, and the newer form factor is nice - the shape and textures are very satisfying to fidget with. The built in keychain is a nice touch.

I honestly use my keys to find my phone much more frequently than the other way around, so it's been when more useful than anticipated. This is a great price for a single, though I have seen 4 packs for $15 each.

bluetooth.
all Samsung with Android 11 and up.
not automatically opted in.
you have to install the Samsung Smart Things App.
you can opt out, but you lose the ability to track your own tags.

This is my dislike of Samsung SmartTag2.

The Tracking DO NOT HAVE HISTORY.

The Tracking DO NOT UPDATE in the background.

When you first open the app after a long while,
it will show you the last location,
which could be a day, a month, a year ago,
depending on when was the last time you opened the app.
You have to click Refresh to Update.
First location update takes 1 minute to 10 minutes.
Updates are about 2 minute to 6 minutes behind.
2 minutes is the MAX update frequency.

For,
checking if you left your bag at your house or your friend's house.
NOT FOR,
tracking and chasing thief who just stole your gear.

For,
checking if your luggage is at your destination Airport.
NOT FOR,
which direction your luggage is within the Airport.

The direction finding feature is a joke.
The direction finding feature is only available when you are within 10 paces or so.
If you are playing Hide and Seek in the same bedroom, then the feature works as show in ADs.
If you are wondering which direction your luggage is located inside an airport,
then by the time the direction finding feature turns on,
you would have seen your luggage, walked 10 paces, loaded your luggage onto your cart, and started to walk away.

Not sure how Samsung Air Tag compares to Apple Air Tag.
Does Apple Air Tag show history?
How quickly does Apple Air Tag update?

Fairly sure Samsung released the SmartTag (Jan 2021) before Apple released the Airtag (April 2021). So not sure who copied who here but likely development happened during a similar time frame.

Hmm, this would seem to limit a small number of Samsung devices to help track tags in their Find Network. I've read that only Samsung Galaxy phones qualify as well. I know others with Samsung Galaxy phones and they've never installed the SmartThings app so it sounds like their phones have never participated in the Find Network.

I'm surprised though that many reviews say that Samsung tags work well in regards to being able to location updates with their Find Network. Not as well or as often as Apple air tags, but better than Android Find My Device tags.

i was surprised too at how well it works in the city, don't know about rural area.

SmartThings app is also used for all other Samsung Products (Door Locks, Lights, Washing Machine, Vacuum, TV, etc.)
and other third party devices like, mater, harman, etc.

Google's Find My Device is now like Apple's AirTag. I recently bought a Chipolo ONE Point item tracker to test in my checked luggage while traveling to the Caribbean, and it worked just as well as my friend's AirTag. I was able to track my bag through Boston's Logan Airport right to the plane—and the same when I landed getting unloaded off the plane.

Google's Find My Device works with Android devices running Android 9 (Pie) or later, as long as they have Google Play Services installed, which most do. Android 9 was released in August 2018, so most modern Android devices should meet this requirement.

I agree for something like an airport, or if you live in a populated area, these will work nearly identically. However, for my use cases, I'm not confident a Samsung only device would update nearly as frequently than Apple's.

Although, thinking on it now. Surely it's infinitely better to have SOME sort of tracker rather than none. I guess I might pick one up then.

I didn't go with Samsung because it's proprietary to Samsung, whereas Google's Find My Device works with any Android phone running Android 9 or later, as long as it has Google Play Services app installed (most do)

For some reason, Best Buy has the Chipolo on clearance for $14, which is odd since it's a new product... I just grabbed two more!

Wow, I'm upset. I just typed this out once, I swiped up, and no warning just wiped the draft entirely.

Anyways! I did do some digging into this. There doesn't seem to be a whole lot of easy to find and easy to digest information regarding it as of yet. From what I did find, it's safe to say there's certainly growing pains with the service.

Main points I gathered being that it's an opt-in service rather than opt-out. Both contrary to Apple, which doesn't even OFFER an opt-out. Then there's something about not all manufactured implementing it? Then I saw something contradicting that, because it's not a device specific or even Android feature, but it's linked to Play Store services? Then there's the fact I can't even find an option to opt-in or out of it on my own to help contribute to other users 🤷 ♂️.

I think this is the one time I'm rooting for a EULA roofie that everybody just unknowingly agrees to.

Idk, I'm sure it'll get sorted out EVENTUALLY. $14 is a good deal, it's cheap insurance. I'll grab some.

Appreciate you!

I already have the chipolo credit card size wallet tracker and I am very happy with it. Will grab a couple of these, thanks!

Any idea if I have to use Google find my device, or if I can track these via the chipolo app?

I have these.
I just located a set of keys in my house using History.
Pulled up my app and saw the last time they departed my home, where they went and when they returned. Help me track them to the coat pocket of my kids winter jacket stuffed in a closet in a fashion that was making hearing the beeping hard over the TV.
