Clears out residue left from soap, softener along with extra soiled clothes.
Front loaders use less water so it is important to run these through on occasion.
I don't think it needs to be done monthly if you have light usage like us. 1 load a week as we are just 2 adults with the kids out of the house.

If you have hard water deposits, use liquid fabric softener, or only use the high efficiency wash cycles, you might develop some buildup in the machine.
It's more effective for front loading washing machines, where you can actually get detergent buildup around the seals and where a simple vinegar cleaning cycle shouldn't be used (it can dry out the seals).
If you have a top loader, just run citric acid or vinegar through a warm wash and it will work just as well.
But most importantly, you should always be leaving your washer door open after cycles so that it has a chance to dry out.
