If you care about it, this set has no special features like the old blu ray set did. it was also $40 in october 2024 from Gruv once.

I suspect you are mis remembering.
According to the Blu-Ray.com review this is not correc, all are in 4K.

Same here. Just finished the extended Two Towers last night. Great picture (Dolby Vision on an OLED) and sound (Dolby Atmos on a Dirac-calibrated 5.1.2 AVR system)

I have the extended Hobbit movies and I like them, but the value def isn't on the same level as the extended LOTR. You can tell they were really stretching a lot of the scenes to fill up 3 movies, whereas in LOTR the extra running time adds a ton of context and depth. I still watch the extended Hobbit because any extra time in Middle Earth is still good.

I have a weird question - I currently have the extended Blu-ray set and a 4k OLED TV with Dolby Vision and I just got a PS5 which can play 4k discs. However, due to the outdated home theater wiring that came with my house, the permanent in wall HDMI is too slow to transmit both HDR/DV and 4k, so I'm stuck with 1080p HDR/DV. Would it still be worth it to upgrade to this 4k set based on the transfer and DV benefits?

I have the set. Can confirm does not have digital codes or any special features. The extended 4k movies are spread across 2 discs so you have to do a disc swap in the middle of the movie.

If it was me, screw the old wiring, I want the best quality I can get out of my hardware even if I have to have one HDMI cable showing. And you'll be wasting your PS5 if you're not getting 4k from it.

How do you know the speed of the HDMI cable?
Keep in mind the PS5 doesn't support DV on disc.
Depending on the circumstance,you could replace it by using it to rerun a new one.

The picture is an upgrade but it's not a reference transfer.
The Atmos is an upgrade but TBH it's only worth it if you have an optimal setup.
The BR was a reference on that side.
