Assuming we're not going to get $20 deal this year or deal with gift card. Might hold out for another week or two, but starting not too feel optimistic

After playing the H&R/Newegg pricing games for the past 3-4 years and waiting for a better deal to come this year, I finally gave up and went to FreeTaxUSA. Most likely will never go back to H&R.

FTUsa cost me $15 total for federal and state - and unlike H*R, there was no additional state e-file fees (my situation includes W2, stock sale, retirement, HSA's, etc.). Interface is just as intuitive as H&R or TurboTax.

I got the same "2 day" message after submission but got a text & email quickly denying my offer. You can also check your account under offers for their reply.

McAfee VPN apparently has very little functionality compared to the good VPNs. It can't do the necessary tricks that the others can do. Plus, they won't say if they log your activity. They are U.S. based and can be subpoenaed.

I just discovered Direct File. I appears to be an IRS program that allows free federal and state filing if you live in one of 25 states that are currently supported, and meet other criteria.

https://directfile.irs.gov/
https://www.irs.gov/filing/irs-di...e-for-free

I don't really know anything about it, but seems legit and worth exploring.

If anyone here has used it before, please share about your experience with it.
Can't use this method if you have 1099-DIV income, which rules me out because I own stocks that pay dividends.

Just noticed freetaxusa charges $16 for amended returns. Many jerk companies send out late 1099s or amended 1099s which would then require you to file an amended return. I actually would prefer using web version over desktop so I'm torn between H&R block which I know is reliable and no surprise charges vs freetaxusa which is probably going to end up being a better long term solution.

If you upgrade to FTUSA deluxe for $8 more, you get unlimited amendments and better support options. So if you expect to need that amendment, better to just upgrade from the get go.

Cash App is free for federal and state and will handle 1099-DIV income just fine. So will FreeTaxUSA and OLT.com, but they charge for state filing.

One operational question,

I have multiple copies of form 8938 (about 5) and need to ensure they are sent during efiling .how do I verify what pages being sent out? When I print Fed filing the multiple forms don't show , if I print using selected form then the copies show.

Anyone having faced similar?

If you owe more than $1000, the IRS charges an underpayment penalty, including interest on the owed amount which increases daily until you pay.

I went ahead with H&R Block order. Its been 12 hours and no email with code/link and I don't see it in the Order page like last year as well. It shows as Processing. Is it normal to take this long.

Can Free Tax USA import brokerage transactions from E*Trade? Can't find it in their help files.
No FreeTax cannot import brokerage transactions. I have used Block and TurboTax and FreeTax and for me the FreeTax interface is by far the worst. Everything is manual and not intuitive and very little hand holding unless you pay extra for it. FreeTax even asked me for my credit card before I finished my taxes. That was a deal breaker for me. If Federal efile is free then why are they asking you for your credit card until you file your state?
