Edit: ST26000DM000 mfg date 02/2025. Seagate website indicates the serial # on the drive is a Barracuda w/ 1yr warranty. Oh well, looks like the days of discount exos are gone, and I'll be returning this one.

SMR and HAMR are not mutually exclusive. HAMR drives can also be SMR, though they seem to gain proportionally less capacity from it.
Then again, nothing surprises me with the cost cutting at drive makers.
For now HAMR is being billed as a speed enhancement over SMR as I don't think there's a cost savings today.
I'm hoping SSD prices become competitive before HAMR becomes appealing to me, but then I've been thinking that might happen any year since 2008.

24x7 archival/read operations makes energy efficiency a higher priority than speed. It's also newish tech so reliability may not be as good.
And HAMR is smashing the capacity limitations of the past decade.
What we need are some of the speed enhancements HDD makers have teased, mated to CMR-derived HAMR, to get low-speed SSD-grade performance from HDD.
That in turn will put pressure on the SSD market to continuously improve.
So really we need fast(er) hard drives to get cheaper.
Suggesting this as BestBuy might put the price back up in a day or two.

If we don't stockpile on deals, the market will have to lower prices long term. Hold the line.
We're very close to seeing 8TB SSD sink below $500. 26TB will be $300 normally if we don't stockpile now.
I should have listened to SD. seagate sucks so bad.

I just grabbed one, will return if these are new stealth barracudas. I also grabbed the 24tb and lucked out with an exos with a non 2025 date and haven't had any issues so far, have not shucked it yet.
