In my experience, this soil is closer to being 'mulch' than soil. You need to heavily amend it for it to be usable.

I used this 3 years ago and it was full of sticks and such and grew weeds. Bought 10 bags. I hope I just got a bad batch but never bought it since.

I would not recommend that, The bags I bought were terrible....not sure Miracle Gro will be better but thats why I buy a test bag to check out that batch .

I find these to be hit or miss depending if you get mostly black usable soil or if it's still a bit chunky with wood, depending on its batch creation and location and any given time, a crapshoot really. However, I had seven bags that were a bit too mulchy in content that I left sealed in bag and stacked out in the open in my yard since last year. It mostly composted down into the good rich black soil this time around. Just my experience with these, I like to buy them when they go on sale at different times and stores and see which ones are usable now or later. I have a lot of time on my hands on weekends I suppose.

It's "potting soil with compost" at Costco but feels like garden blend. I've seen many complaints about fungus gnats in the bags. Smells awful too. I've diced to use it for lawn soil amendments because it stinks for containers.

Can tell you don't garden. What if the ground is contaminated soil? Or your ground is desert rock?

Well, you could buy top soil, but it's very austere in nutrients and won't grow anything well. Or you can buy straight compost, which has lots of nutrients, but has no structure for roots. Or you buy bagged garden soil, which combines the two, and comes in bag form for those who don't need cubic yards can't get a cubic yards of soil dumped somewhere.
