This player holds its value well for a reason: With any of the consoles, it won't play Dolby vision blurays in Dolby vision even if the TV supports it, it'll fall back to generic HDR. This player works properly for that. It's complete bogus as Xbox at least supports Dolby vision for streaming and games, but it's a different "profile" or something. And for putting a blue ray drive into a PC, it's only good for ripping bluerays for Plex, windows can't play them natively unlike DVDs, you have to use cyberpowerdvd or something because of the DRM and those programs are just laughably buggy these days. I believe the DRM also only works on Intel processors up to 10th or 11th gen and anything beyond that you'd have to rip the blue rays into mkvs, and that's fine for folks who are technologically savvy and maybe already into the homelab scene, but not everyone is willing to do that

This is hilarious. People who don't own a high end AV system will already ignore this. Your comments are not as useful as you think it is.

I don't mind paying $360 for a blu-ray player but I really wish Panasonic would provide an updated model. This model was released in 2018. It shouldn't cost this much given its age.
I'd like it if they just got rid of all the quirks and issues.

Well that too. A refreshed model that fixes any hardware bugs and faster UI from faster internal processors.

Every damn thread with BR players in it, there's always one.
Almost always many more than one. I haven't even progressed 3/4 of the way through and there must be 4. 5?

But yes, always one that just sticks with it and proves more with every post that PQ/SQ isn't really important to them and that pirating is AOK.

To be fair there really isn't anything meaningful to "update" this to.
It's not like there has been an update to HDR or Atmos in that time.

I have had this for almost two years(420 for almost the same) with zero quirks & issues.

People complain about the price of this as it is, a new one would likely cost more.
I for one wouldn't pay more just for a faster/nicer UI.

I'm considering buying one, but not from 6ave since they are not a Panasonic-authorized retailer, and the manufacturer's warranty won't be honored.

I would upgrade to the UB450. The LG OLED TVs have better upscalers inside them than the 820 so it's best to set the output from these players for standard blu-rays as 1080p anyway and let the TV do the work, meaning the "extras" in the 820 are useless. The 450 will output 4k dolby vision which the 420 lacks. The upgrade from the 420 to the 450 would be buying you dolby vision, which I think is an important feature.
BTW, IMO, should be setting your 420 to output 1080p for standard 1080p blu-rays as well.
Is this automatic? I haven't changed a single thing on my player since I got it

Any way to get this model to play all regions A, B, and C? Thanks.
Agreed! We need a player that can play all region discs, especially since discs are harder to find locally now.

How are fancy restaurants still a thing? We have McDonald's.
No point making that point with this guy; he seems like the one to dine and dash anyway LOL.

- I just got a new ub820 on ebay for $300 last week, so you can get them cheaper if you keep an eye out. It was listed used like new, but did not appear to have been opened.
- I also have a 30TB nas with 2000 or so movies about 500 of which are 5GB 4k yts rips. But I also like have some of my favs on physical 4k UHD to play on the projector. You can do both stream, local plex / kodi and physical it doesn't have to be one or the other.
- $300 is not a big price to pay after spending $5k or more on a entry level home theatre setup.
- I was watching a wolfman yts last week and the blacks were terrible in all the dark scenes and was worried about the projector, then I played a 4k UHD movie and realized the contrast and blacks is just a problem with the compressed rips.
- Even with a 30TB nas that would only store about 500 4K UDH movies or so in full 50 to 100 GB size. There is a huge difference with the 5GB 4k yts rips and the 60GB 4k UDH disc.
Say it louder for the "people still watch DVDs?" crowd because what you describe is precisely what you get streaming. They must be deaf and blind IMO. To them McDonald's is fine dining and a base model Corolla is a sports car.

I've gone through 5 of this exact players. From all the freezing, crashing, won't turn on or off, audio problems, DV problems, I finally gave up.
Sad to hear. I have been using mine for close to 3 years. I have had a small number of issues, but *most* times, they have disappeared using the latest software update.
YMMV, but you may want to try that?

No it isn't and rightfully so, not a good idea imo.
You might as well continue using a BR player, it's basically what he is advocating to do! 🤔

Not all disc have dynamic HDR(DV/HDR10+).
If it doesn't you get static HDR(HDR10).
Any HDR has to be tone mapped for us to currently view it.

Tone mapping is built in to dynamic HDR metadata, you can't manipulate it.

There is no standard on how best to do this with static HDR.
The Optimizer is Panasonic's version.
It kinda works similar to the tone mapping in dynamic HDR.
Basically it upgrades the metadata to the best capabilities of your display frame by frame.

If this doesn't sound advantageous and prefer to rely on the display yes get the downscaled 450 or as mentioned earlier I've ran into the LG 4k player at thrift stores for cheap.

My view on this is that when I was young I had no time or money to fool with such things if something cheaper was available. Streaming was not a thing so that eliminated that. Had it been I would have went that way if given the chance. I personally have my old turntables, cassette decks, vcr's, cd players, receivers, dvd players etc and all still function. I started getting overwhelmed in my early 20's way back in the early 90's with all of the choices and price levels as a new construction manager working 7 days per week at a minimum of 12 hour days so shut it all down and started my own business. Fast forward to 2020 and I got back in with streaming video and music and physical media as well. So glad I kept my 500 or so records and cd's etc as so much good equipment was now available at decent price levels. I do it all now and all ways to consume media have benefits and minuses just realize that and be happy with your choices. Life is far too short to argue about this type of thing. I have a few of the Sony 800M2 that play all discs and bought them for $200 new at Walmart and love them. I have heard this Panasonic is better for video as far as it switches to Dolby Vision automatically vs manually on the Sony and for the price difference I will keep what I have but that doesn't make it wrong that someone else prefers the Panasonic.
