Yes, you can import from a H&R Block or TurboTax PDF. Similar to my experience switching from TT to HRB and back, I would double check that all the carryover credits are transferred properly because the import is not perfect. Usually names, SSN, addresses and things like that come over without any problems. And once you get everything in the system, it will obviously carryover easily for next year. As far as investments, the one big knock on FTUSA (and basically all software besides TT/HRB) is that it doesn't import 1099s from brokerages. You can mitigate this issue by reporting consolidated short and long term capital gains rather than every single trade. This is already done for you on your 1099 form and the IRS gets the full 1099 with all the details anyway.
I'm about halfway done. The 1099s not being able to import is annoying, but hopefully something is in the works to get it there. I'm about to do my backdoor Roth so we'll see how that goes, but almost everything off my Block return pdf from last year transferred through correctly. I think one address has been off because of the way it was formatted on my W2. Other than that, F the Block.

Here's a guide for backdoor Roth with FTUSA, in case you have any trouble: https://thefinancebuff.com/how-to...axusa.html

Every year, I buy this in Dec/Jan and each year the price became cheaper in Feb. People kept saying to hold til Feb for the biggest discounts. Well, I held this year and the prices are going up instead of down. Just my luck.
Ah, cause and effect. You caused it.

Thanks. Used his guide last year for H&R Block and found this one yesterday. Great walkthrough for anyone trying to do it. Basically done with my returns. FTUSA is more user friendly than Block and straight forward. No issues at all. But like we said before. Having a way to import 1099s would be amazing.

Wait, state forms still get filed in the software though right?
I used H&R Fed+State programs for all my previous years. H&R Fed+State does all calculation for the state and gives you a choice to pay for e-file or print and mail in the forms. My State allows people to fill the forms online so I just fill them based on H&R info. FreeTaxUSA only gives the state summary unless you pay $14.99 to e-file the state and then you can get the calculation details. So I only used FreeTaxUSA to e-file the federal. I used H&R 2023 to get my wife and my taxable incomes and then used the State tax instructions to figure out the taxes. Then filled out the forms online.

Thanks. That's what I suspected and now I know.

You can pay $15 to efile state with FreeTaxUSA, or file for free directly with your state's website or paper forms.
And yes, it imports from H&R Block or TurboTax PDF (or other software PDF).
To clarify would you indicate if FTUSA will prepare the state's paper version for free that I can mail in? I would then be able to file Fed free and print and file state free via mailing state using the site? thx

No, you have to pay to get the state done, whether paper or efile. There's no extra charge for efile though.

You could fill out the paper yourself or use your states online filing system (if available), but that would be al separate from ftusa. List of states with free direct filing: https://thefinancebuff.com/free-e...irect.html

If you have RMD (required minimum distribution), this 2024 HRBlock seems to have problem with it.
Make sure you didn't get incorrectly penalized.

I bought this for $20 something a few months back. I just used it, it easily imports Turbotax files and I felt it was as easy to use as TT but quite a bit cheaper. I will totally do it again next year. Granted, I am in TX so no state taxes, and I don't have crazy investments etc.

This is what I just did. FTUSA at least gives you the major numbers for you to fill out a two page state form easily. Especially if you have a prior year to compare to and nothing has really changed. Took about an hour and in reality I could have just filled in what FTUSA gave me for numbers instead of using instructions and worksheets.

Thanks for the follow up. Good to know.

Glad I bit when it was about $20 instead of waiting for the sub $20 special this year.
