If they did not require this some folks would buy dozens to resell (which I have no exact issue with other than it make such a deal impossible to offer)

It's really no different from walking into T-mobile and signing a contract to get a 'free' or subsidized iphone. They take your id there.

I also recommend waiting till it's officially unlocked before sending it to a different country. There are no guarantees with TW, lots of glitches in their system.

As long as it's activated in the US you're probably safe to take it overseas. I tried calling that number and I was on hold for over half an hour. An agent finally picked up but wasn't from Total Wireless, he was from Simple Mobile. He told me it's a sister company and couldn't activate it for me. He forwarded to what he claimed was a TW agent, after 20 min. Someone from Tracfone picked up and same story, couldn't activate it because he wasn't from TW. I gave up on the phone system and contacted them through chat instead.
