I'm not sure about the reliability of this model - would it be safer to go with TCL instead? I'm looking for a budget-friendly 55–65" TV for my kids room, in the $200–250 range, but I'm not sure which model would be the best option in that price point.

Bought this for my dad last Christmas. Lasted 6 months
Well... you should consider yourself lucky, it lasted 6x longer than with most people.

Is this the same Pioneer company that made quality stuff or were they bought out?
And no....I'm not saying this should be the same as a Kuro from back in the day for $200.00.
Just want to understand if the company has changed hands beore considering buying (vs. TCL or Hisense, etc)
Pioneer has not changed hands. The TVs are actually TCL and even though TCL manufacturers decent bargain TVs, This model is comparable to a Element TV.

We have 2 of these...one my kids dorm room where I don't think it ever is shut off because it is either doing Playstation or sports...and zero problems. Like anything now a days, there are good ones and bad ones.
I got a 43" Pioneer Fire television from Amazon three years ago. Last week, a specific video setting that I haven't found yet has made all the reds and oranges glow like the surface of the sun. Had to switch it from dynamic preset to the movie preset setting to calm it down.
Don't know if that means that my television is dying or not, but do with that info what you will.
I got one as a replacement for a Phillips Fire TV that stopped working after a year. I got his Pioneer as a replacement because I bought the extended warranty from Allstate. It is a step up from my Phillips, but the interface response is slower.
