Best paid by you but planer goes to me!
I didn't see the 735X at $499, but I was tempted by the Acme deal for the 735 at that price a month ir so ago. You'd still come out slight ahead if you bought the extension table and third party blades.
I got in on this deal at Home Depot a weekish ago, after deciding between a refurb Laguna PX12 ($450) and Wen spiral cutter planer ($407). Went with the 735X, since it still supposed to be the best.

This tool takes a piece of wood and makes one side parallel to the other, and can thin the board to a target thickness. For smoothing out a rough cut board you want a jointer. This tool can do jointing but it's a bit more work and takes a jig to do a good job, google something like 'jointing on a planer' or 'jointing without a jointer' for more.
Basically you use the jointer to get one smooth flat face, use the planer to make the other face smooth and parallel, then use either the jointer or a few other means to make the edges flat and perpendicular to the faces. If this isn't something you expect to do much, it's a lot cheaper to just pay a shop to do it.
