Great to see an option becoming widely available (Amazon vs. Micro Center) that could be used to build a DIY upgrade option that competes price-wise with what have typically been bundle deals from Newegg and Micro Center (as of late).

This CPU is far from a barn-burner, but for old enough systems this is a great option for upgrading your PC to eligibility for an automatic upgrade to Windows 11.

The comments section will inevitably include notes about AM4 being a dead-end platform and/or the relatively low-horsepower of this CPU. Of course, if you'rve been holding out with a PC rocking something like an AMD Phenom II or Core 2 Quad CPU (both actual upgrades I've done to AM4 systems), those considerations may be of limited significance to your intended purposes.

Good luck!
Jon

Am4 is still a great platform. I recently bought another AM4 board to continue rocking my 5800x. I have a 5700g in my server until 5900 prices drop more.

The problem is there are a lot of am4 1600 and below cpu's out there due to cpu upgrades. There are no a320/b350/b450 Mother boards to be bought these days at a reasonable price..

I have a couple 1600's That came to me via 5600 upgrades and it is a shame to turn them over to the recycling fire.

I bought a tpm upgrade for my a320 board. It sees the module and the light on the board seems to indicate operation. The Bios see's it to. How farked can it be that a fresh install of win 11 still pukes on a unsuported cpu.. A lot of e-waste coming or a fresh class of linux users. win11 might be the shark Microsoft jumps over. I guess I beet a dead hoarse, but It is still is viable.

Windows 7 wasn't a free upgrade. The fact that all upgrades have been free since then tells you that their product isn't considered necessary by most users.

The Ryzen 5 5500 for $74 is a better deal as an upgrade for an old AM4 board than this one, in my opinion. I think it maxes out a B450 motherboard while still being quite budget. There is a noticeable performance difference. Next step above that would be the 5800XT for $130, and that's also quite performant for the price. It would make a powerful, cheap final CPU upgrade for AM4, up to 50% faster than the 5500, but for almost double the price. The 5500 or 5800XT are better options, depending on what video card you plan to run and your total budget.

I do agree. I think the 5500 is the better deal but both are basically the same thing. Both are based on laptop APUs and are effectively a 4600g and 5600g with the integrated GPU disabled. I think the bump up to zen 3 vs zen 2 is worth the extra 15 bucks but either is going to be a major upgrade over a 1000 or 2000 series processor. Even the 8 core processors from those generations should be beat by either 6 core processor in most or all tasks and officially support Windows 11. I wish the cheap 5700x3d deals were still around but those seem to have all dried up.

I think I already know the answer to this, but would this be an "upgrade" from a 2600? I'm thinking a lateral move at best.

The 5500s chief advantage is with very low power and heat. Great for cramped cases where cooling could be an issue. The only downside is pcie 3 only support. The geniuses at amd and Intel decided that budget gpus should only be for brand new system builds is fairly disturbing.

I believe this 4500 is inferior all around compared to the 5500. Anything above the 5700x(?) I believe requires more that 65w which you might want to stay away from.

Same question. I have three computers I built for kids pre Covid all using b450 boards with 1600 and 2600 CPU's. They seem to still be working fine running 570 and 580 GPUs for Roblox and Minecraft. Any reason to upgrade here or recommendations? I have to upgrade 3 of them and $ is always an issue.
