5Gbps is such an unusual speed, I would pass on that and just get the 2.5Gbps if I were 99.999% of people.

Definitely don't get "ludicrous" speed then either.

I recommend 2.5Gbps, I don't see the use for 5Gbps. The fastest internet I see available is 2Gbps from Verizon.

I could see a use case if you have a NAS for 2.5Gbps with M.2 drives but 5Gbps maybe if you are using a shared NAS with multiple M.2 drives editing 4K video.

Also, it can get very expensive integrating switches/setup and upgrading everything but for the majority of people this is overkill.

A few heads up for those considering purchasing:
  • Some older phones like the One Plus 8T have issues with correctly detecting USB C ethernet adapters faster than 1Gbps
  • These USB-C to ethernet adapters draw quite a bit of power from a cell phone or tablet. If you plan on using this with a laptop, it is no big deal, but if you plan on pairing it to a phone or tablet, I encourage you to get a USB-C to ethernet adapter with pass-thru Power Delivery.

When traveling, what are the advantages of an available ethernet connection over wifi?

I know at least two hotels I have stayed at where the wifi speed is complete crap. Pretty sure they are using outdated equipment or something. They happened to have an ethernet jack at the office desk area. The speed was 100x better.
