Otherwise consider the S24 FE which can be found on sale with some pre-paid carriers at times.

it's not exactly getting rid of it, but it moves it to the right side.

I took advantage of this, ordering the S22 through the program, trading in my wife's Galaxy A32 5G and only being charged $149 + taxes. After sending in our old device, we received an email saying our Galaxy A32 was not eligible for the trade-in, and that we'd be charged the $300 credit.
The A32 has a 5G and a non-5G version, and they clearly & mistakenly thought we sent in the latter. I contacted their customer support, who fortunately understood the problem right away and escalated my case. Today I received confirmation that I would not be charged the $300.
I didn't have to send my photo evidence of the correct model/product name, but I highly recommend everyone do so anyway to protect yourself in these types of mistakes on Samsung's end.

I was thinking get a cheaper phone but that's it, non of these make sense since it's $300 vs $500 from T-Mobile.
I recently picked up a straight talk iphone 13 for 199. Should I return that and use my XR as trade in for an S23?

So, definitely don't buy S22 Ultra especially at these prices.
