See the steps below from https://slickdeals.net/f/17077762-at-t-128gb-samsung-galaxy-s22-ultra-5g-w-added-line-or-new-customer-activation-350-35-activation-free-w-free-s-h?p=167181442#post167181442 (you will have to change to s24 from s22 if you want to flash unlocked firmware) but rest is same.

ATT requires 60 days active before unlocking the phone. However, there is SIM Swap method which worked well in the past for unlocking paid-off ATT phones right away.

0. Do the following steps after paying off the phone fully and then waiting for a day or so for the unlock portal to get the paid off status.

1. ATT changed their unlock policy on 3/18 to require 60 days of service before they can unlock a fully paid device. Previously, it used to be right away if you have paid in full.
2. There two timeline for the cancellation. If you cancel a line before 3 days it was active then the activation fee is waived. If you cancel it within 14 days from activation under buyers remorse then no bill is charged but activation fees need to be paid. The line activates on right when you place the order not the day you receive the phone on hand so you might have to pay the activation fee of $35.
3. You can use a tello number and port to ATT but you would have to make sure porting is successful by going to https://www.att.com/portstatus/. Many from z fold 3 got stuck in porting limbo and got the ATT account cancelled.
4. As with many deals here, a SIM swap method is found which can be used to unlock the device. This was working recently but not sure if ATT would fix it by the time you try it. The steps are as follows.
a. Pay in full for the phone. While your payment will quickly reflect in your account it will be at least a few hours before it updates for the unlock request.
b. When you receive the phone activate it on ATT with the SIM provided. Make sure it shows up on myATT app/in the web so ATT knows and registers the IMEI in the network. Then put the SIM in another unlocked phone, reboot, make some calls and make sure this unlocked phone is now showing under the line in app/web portal.
c. Now go to ATT unlock portal https://www.att.com/deviceunlock/ and then choose not an ATT customer and use the IMEI of ATT phone and submit an unlock request.DO NOT attempt more than twice or you will be blocked for 24 hours.
d.Confirm the unlock request email and receive the unlock code.
e. Only cancel the line after you have unlocked the phone.

Then after unlocking if you are feeling adventurous and want to flash the phone to an unlocked firmware to get rid of ATT bloat you can follow these steps. It's actually very easy to do with Odin.

1. There are many models of s22 ultra but in US two models are imp. S908U is carrier locked version and S908U1 is the unlocked US version. The firmware for these versions are interchangeable so you can flash the ATT model with S908U1 firmware.
2. Download patched odin v3.14.1_3B_PatchedD.zip from https://xdaforums.com/t/patched-o...1.3762572/ as regular odin does not allow flashing mismatched firmware.
3. Download the firmware from S908U1 XAA version from https://samfrew.com/model/SM-S908U1/region/XAA/ Extract as there will be multiple files.
4. Connect S22U to the windows PC.
5 .Put s22u in download/recovery/odin mode. Power down. Press Volume up and down together and then press Volume up to go into recovery (a green screen would appear).
6. Start odin and then select different files for different categories and then start.
7, It should be now the US unlocked version.

FYI for those ordering with ATT, activation fee on the bill can be waived automatically by clicking on "don't recognize this fee" on the bill on web/app even if it's more than 3 days. It's one time (every 12 months or so) favor from ATT. See wiki of this thread https://slickdeals.net/f/17327499-oneplus-nord-n30-5g-128gb-unlocked-chromatic-gray-cph2513-best-buy-0 for more details on bills afterwards.

I ordered online yesterday the ATT one to expect receiving it today. Called both the Ontrac and Walmart since there is no update on tracking. Walmart said it's not in stock so they will send once it is back in stock. Online already showed and still showing it's in stock. Now I will not be able to receive it any time soon and will miss the 1-3 days window to playoff and cancel etc. Too much hassle imo. now I am preparing to cancel the order if no update later today 😞. Credit pull loss

Finally i received end of 3rd day. it was memorial day holiday when i ordered hence the delay. Was able to cancel it 4th day. Will likely get bill including the activation fee which will see if can get waived . Thanks OP

I will try, but I plan to return the phone itself to Walmart. Let's see they will cancel everything.

If you try to return to Walmart, make sure you return in the WARP wireless dept as that needs to go to Verizon for them to cancel on their end.

but then would be able to sim swap to unlock?
Yes. I swapped the AT&T SIM to another phone, confirmed that that phone was registered to the AT&T line, ported out the AT&T line to cancel, and then requested unlock from the AT&T unlock portal. Just like Verizon, "the remaining unpaid installment balance is due immediately when you cancel the line linked to the plan" on AT&T. The overpayment took care of the remaining installment balance.

6/19: Ordered Verizon S24U.6/22: Received phone and activated6/23: Paid off $432 at Verizon store. Port out to Tello. Line is automatically disconnected. 6/28: Received final bill of $56.xx. They did not cancel the $35 activation fee. Looks like they count 3 days from the day of shipping and not the day you activate on the Verizon network. Any chance that they will take the activation fee off from the final bill?
You are able to use the Verizon phone on tello during the 60 day verizon locked period?

Please confirm your return experience at Walmart if you do go down that path. Certainly do not return it at Customer Service as it does not address the carrier instalment plan. See my experience earlier in this thread.

I have the Verizon S24 Plus version of the phone (line cancelled and PPD paid off). Where on the phone can I go to check when the locked status changes to unlocked?

Go to Settings > Connections > Mobile networks > Network operators
Toggle off "Select automatically" and see if a list of carriers appears. If multiple carriers are listed, the phone is likely unlocked.
The best way to tell, though, is to insert a SIM from a different carrier. If it is locked, it will prompt for a network unlock code.

Thank you for everyone's help.

Ordered 6/24
Shipped 6/25
Received 6/27

Followed all the steps to unlock the phone. It takes some time but worth it.

Unlocked phone and installed all the updates.

Chatted with customer service and they said they cancelled the line and $0 balance. We will see.

Took 20 minutes on chat.

At&T phone
did u unlock the phone first or cancel the line first?

I just made an ATT order. Received an email from ATT for confirmation about the email for my account. After I confirmed it, I could not find any info about my ATT account ( I'm new to ATT ). Should I wait for more email from ATT about my account or chat w/ agent online to get it paid off right away?

Any tricks to waive off the activation fee charge from Verizon? Chat function is disabled since the line is disconnected so it looks like I will need to call them.

Yeah wait for another email from ATT. DO NOT cancel before you get a chance to do SIM swap to unlock.

I did a SIM swap. My old unlocked phone now shows up in the AT&T web portal, but the myAT&T app still shows the new Samsung device.

I waited overnight before trying again, but when I submit an unlock request, I still get this message:
"We can't unlock your device because your service hasn't been active for at least 60 days. Submit a new unlock request after your service has been active for at least 60 days."

Has anyone run into this? Any idea how to get around it or resolve the issue? Thanks alot

Call customer care and ask them to unlock. Worked for many people here.

Thanks. I did received another email from ATT to finish registration. After that, I login into my account and found my new number. Could not find any info about new device and where to pay it off. Do I need to wait until I receive and activate the device to see the device info under my account? then I can pay it off? I remember that someone mentioned that you can pay it off before you receive the phone. Or it's a better idea to pay it off after I receive it in case something goes wrong with delivery.

I suggest waiting until the phone arrives as if it's get lost it will be a really big problem to return/cancel. For ATT waiting a few days does not matter as you can always get the activation fee voided instantly even after 3 days, see my pinned comment so you end up with couple of more days of prorated usage.

I suggest trying SIM swap again making sure the old phone shows up in both app and website. Also try with the other IMEI for unlock request. If all fails, talk to CS to see if they can give you the unlock code.
