Tempted. I have a M1 Pro with similar specs, but it has a 1tb drive. I'm wondering if this will be better for photo editing and light 3d modeling. Biggest concern is the 16gb of RAM over getting one with 24GB or more.

See, this is when I wished we could upgrade here to the 10GB NIC. These deal's are pretty tempting otherwise.

At 18% off, this is an excellent deal. In mid-April, I paid a little extra for the 24GB memory and 512GB SSD. While that configuration is currently about $876 (12% discount) - Bang for the buck, I think this computer is superb in every way. I'm a bit surprised you can get such value from Apple, and the basic configuration as shown here is just fine for most users. Unfortunately, Apple bets you up for some extra memory or storage. The M5 will be out fall of 2025. I can't say it's worth waiting for. Adding a hub to a Mac mini will give you more ports and the ability to add as much as 16tb of SSD storage in Raid 0.

I know, same here, I am torn between buying it for $450 from micro center and buy a 10gb adapter ($125+) or from apple edu store and pay $499+ $90(10gbe)

Amazing machine. 256gb in 2025 is laughable.

$449 at microcenter for the last 2 weeks or so - IF you have one nearby. Decent local stock in St Davids PA.

The issue, when looking at M-Series Apple computers, is that you must remember that the RAM is "unified" between the CPU and GPU, so you need more built-in memory than what you think you do for optimal performance and a minimal amount of page caching. You also need to add into the cost a decently fast (though not extreme) external storage drive for the Time Machine. A Mac can end up eating its internal storage drive alive with all the backup points it creates. That process should be shifted to external storage. Then you may also need a very fast SSD and offload other functions.
The tempting base price is always half the story.
An old, tired, and outdated argument.

M4 chip is a beast for emulators. It is also sipping energy comparing to Intel/AMD chip.

Can you just plug and play an external SD or need to set up a more elaborate RAID? Not well versed in this. Thanks

Yep. M4 mini will run 1.5-4W in real-world idle for most folks. A typical modern desktop PC (especially one built for gaming) will idle more like 50-120W+

To put that another way ($$$), if left running 24/7, that's ~$5 vs ~$175 per year.

M2 uses about 2.9 watts on low power mode too...
