I buy cheap wooden cutting boards and they last me years. All you have to do is make sure you wash BOTH sides of the board after use and then completely dry before storing. Washing/wetting only one side will warp and eventually break the board.

We're not eating the board, it's just traces amounts that leeches onto the food as you're cutting it, I think it's fine, it's seen more harmful chemicals during the entire food packaging and transport process.

this sounds like the most economical sustainable, least toxic choice but I wish somebody would just sell those because most of us don't have the time to do that. But if this is quite doable why do they mostly sell the glued pieces of wood chopping boards? How long do you have to cure it and how long does it take to sand down the board to get it smooth enough? Or would Home Depot sell some suitable wood pieces? That they could cut smooth or sand down for us? Should we think of this when we cut down oak tree?
