So basically it supports all the nice new tech under the sun and the only downside is 5-channel and shit room EQ software (please don't use it!). But for $200 it's literally the best thing to get started. You would have to spend several times more money to get something that is an upgrade from this.

just go with some Sonos with rear and side speakers and maybe a soundbar
No thanks. My parents spent over $1,500 on Sonos for mediocre sound. The great thing about sound is that you can actually buy real speakers and subwoofer for cheaper than Sonos and blow them out of the water.Oh no, I had to set up an AV receiver and connect some speaker wire, and save money for superior audio.

is it necessary? is it needed? no of course not. but some people like it. who TF cares. those are personal questions. why TF are you asking about it on a deal site?
