40L is under nearly every rectangular volume allowed on NA and EU carriers. I've had one for about a year and a half now, and I *can* pack it so full it won't fit in the overhead, but unless I decide to overstuff it and add my shoes in the outside pockets, it is a perfect fit for nearly every jet built in the past 30 years and turboprops like the ATR72. In the latter is where I encountered the "too full" pack option, though I was packed for a 4+ week Christmas trip. In an Embraer 145 it fits perfectly in an overhead, if admittedly taking up an entire overhead. In a Airbus 32x Neo it fits like a glove with the long dimension = the depth of the overhead bin and the width = height of the bin, so multiple Farpoint/Fairviews can stack like sideways pancakes.

If you're of tall or stout build (I'm 6' 200#) nobody blinks twice letting you on while all the wheelies have to get checked. OTOH, if you're smaller (wife is 5'1 on a tall day) you might get some side glances, and once she was even informed she had to check her bag despite my walking through with essentially the same pack and not a single word. If you do have to stow it, the zip-up back flap that covers the shoulder straps and hip belt makes for a smooth, nearly snagless profile for automated luggage handling safety.

NOTE: if you're not an organization fiend like me, and want a daypack/underseat "personal" item, I'd spend the extra $40 and get the 55L Version [amazon.com]. That's a 40L Farview with a 15L daypack that is designed to piggyback, strapping in place quite nicely - though it does move the center of gravity of the system a bit far back. Definitely a traveler walking to a hotel/hostel configuration and not an Appalachian Trail through hiker rig. The downside to the 15L is that is has limited internal organization pockets - not quite as bare bones as a stuff pack (not by a long shot) but you're not going to get 16 built in pouches and pockets like you will with something like the Everki Studio [everki.com], but it's a might bit less expensive too. The differences in the 40L vs 40L that comes with the 15L pack are mainly that the laptop sleeve is in the 15L, leaving more room in the main pack. I think there may be one other difference...but it escapes me at the moment.

Anyway, after a dozen or so trips across the US and Europe, I give this pack top marks.

I snagged the Porter 30l a few years ago for less than $50 (thanks, SD!) and love it. It's small enough to be a personal item and fit under the seat for the cheap flights that charge for a full sized carry on.

I've had one of these for several years. Great bag. Got several Ospreys. If this is the same model I have, you can also clip one of their Daylite packs to the outside of this. So one is your carry on, and the other is your personal item. You just marry them back up when you get off the plane.

Lifetime warranty?
I found this review on the rei website for this backpack: Started falling apart at the seams after 6 months of use. Osprey refused to honor their warranty and just offered me a discount on my next bag. There are less expensive, better built backpacks out there.

one of the best backpacks money can buy. The Osprey lifetime warranty makes this a worthy investment if you need a high quality backpack to last a decade or more. I've also had great experience w this brand Kelty, which has a 50L on sale for $135 in olive green. I bought their 44 liter backpack about 8 years ago and it has been around the world with me and is still going strong after heavy use transporting stones (I collect stones - bringing them home on your carry on is most cost effective vs shipping or checked luggage.) https://a.co/d/88iCGMj

To each their own. My last pack was a Kelty 2000 - a $150 pack I got for free for test driving an Isuzu(?) back around 2001 or so. I retired it as my primary pack in 2022 after it was my one-bag for a three week, around-the-world trip. The interior surface coating started failing and I came back with bits of the pack lining falling off. Note that, on asking Kelty about their lifetime warranty, I was informed that 20 years was a long time and I'd certainly got my money's worth so they wouldn't be replacing it, but offered me a 10% off coupon on any full priced pack in their web store. I will not be purchasing another Kelty, and I hope Osprey stands behind their equipment in the future.
Looks like Kelty isn't the only company like that. I found this review about this backpack on the rei website: Started falling apart at the seams after 6 months of use. I wish I could think of a reason to buy this deal, but I don't see the one I have wearing out any time soon (and I use it a lot).
So I have an Ozark Trail pack similar to this one (functionally identical), and I've been using it since 1995. Great pack and when I thought about getting another one--it didn't exist anymore.

And this seems to be a common problem today with great things--they are there for a window of time and then gone. So what I've learned is if it's good and a lifetime item you want with you for a lifetime--buy enough for a lifetime. Wink

I'm considering this pack and the others mentioned in this thread simply to have a backup pack now since I literally rely on my Ozark Trail for every single trip I take.

Thank you for posting about these! They sound great too. Smilie I can see what someone said about the backpack rabbit hole now, haha. Now my wish list is 2x packs and when I entered this thread I was fine! Big Grin

The onebag reddit often recommends the Osprey daylite 26+6 that fits in almost all personal item dimensions (unexpanded), only a single minimal laptop sleeve so you'd probably need additional protection or padding for your other gear.

Anyone use the 55L as a carryon with the detachable portion as an underseat bag?
This is exactly how I use my Ozark Trail as it has a detachable which I do a full turtle shell with on all my trips. Big guy up top, even on the smaller embraers, and smaller pack under the seat.

A corporation with $50M in annual sales may decide to shirk their warranty commitment, I suppose... That's just rude, imho.
I hate the way most companies are doing this, but it is becoming the 'industry standard' of bait and switch warranties. I wouldn't expect any company anywhere to honor a lifetime warranty after 2030 onwards, if not sooner.

On a plane right now with this in bin above my head. This is a great deal on a wonderful pack. Holds a ton and the whole strap system is super comfortable. Fits way more than I expected when it came out of the package and perfect for one bag trips or with another smaller personal item.

Great backpack. 40l is too big as a carry on these days but some people seem to get away with it on flights heading south..
no it's not. you don't have to fill every spare inch inside the backpack.
