40L is under nearly every rectangular volume allowed on NA and EU carriers. I've had one for about a year and a half now, and I *can* pack it so full it won't fit in the overhead, but unless I decide to overstuff it and add my shoes in the outside pockets, it is a perfect fit for nearly every jet built in the past 30 years and turboprops like the ATR72. In the latter is where I encountered the "too full" pack option, though I was packed for a 4+ week Christmas trip. In an Embraer 145 it fits perfectly in an overhead, if admittedly taking up an entire overhead. In a Airbus 32x Neo it fits like a glove with the long dimension = the depth of the overhead bin and the width = height of the bin, so multiple Farpoint/Fairviews can stack like sideways pancakes.

If you're of tall or stout build (I'm 6' 200#) nobody blinks twice letting you on while all the wheelies have to get checked. OTOH, if you're smaller (wife is 5'1 on a tall day) you might get some side glances, and once she was even informed she had to check her bag despite my walking through with essentially the same pack and not a single word. If you do have to stow it, the zip-up back flap that covers the shoulder straps and hip belt makes for a smooth, nearly snagless profile for automated luggage handling safety.

NOTE: if you're not an organization fiend like me, and want a daypack/underseat "personal" item, I'd spend the extra $40 and get the 55L Version [amazon.com]. That's a 40L Farview with a 15L daypack that is designed to piggyback, strapping in place quite nicely - though it does move the center of gravity of the system a bit far back. Definitely a traveler walking to a hotel/hostel configuration and not an Appalachian Trail through hiker rig. The downside to the 15L is that is has limited internal organization pockets - not quite as bare bones as a stuff pack (not by a long shot) but you're not going to get 16 built in pouches and pockets like you will with something like the Everki Studio [everki.com], but it's a might bit less expensive too. The differences in the 40L vs 40L that comes with the 15L pack are mainly that the laptop sleeve is in the 15L, leaving more room in the main pack. I think there may be one other difference...but it escapes me at the moment.

Anyway, after a dozen or so trips across the US and Europe, I give this pack top marks.

So I have an Ozark Trail pack similar to this one (functionally identical), and I've been using it since 1995. Great pack and when I thought about getting another one--it didn't exist anymore.

And this seems to be a common problem today with great things--they are there for a window of time and then gone. So what I've learned is if it's good and a lifetime item you want with you for a lifetime--buy enough for a lifetime. Wink

I'm considering this pack and the others mentioned in this thread simply to have a backup pack now since I literally rely on my Ozark Trail for every single trip I take.
Love the Ozark Trail backpacks! (love the brand for quality and affordability). I have this and it is super comfy and looks great: https://www.walmart.com/ip/Ozark-...hbdg=L1100

Have one of the older models of this and its a solid bag.

I did change over to the REI Ruckpack 30 and 40 bags because they're lighter and I didn't need as many straps that the Osprey had, but these have been reliable.
I have this Ruckpack 40 in Oak brown and must agree with you it is an outstanding bag. I always take it on Europe trips and ALWAYS get away with carrying it as a personal item (carry on + the backpack) . I mostly fly on Delta, Air France and Aer Lingus. https://www.rei.com/product/22795...-pack-mens

As many have said, this is the OG of the One Bag Travel game. I used the previous version of this bag on various trips and probably 50% of the hostel travellers you see use this bag, for good reason. It is bulletproof, extremely extremely comfortable and well tested for extended travel.

I sold my original off and went down the rabbit hole of Gorucks, Aer travel bags, etc etc. But always missed having this bag so I picked up another for this great price. Compared to those more expensive bags you miss out on some organization and other features but in general this is 90% of what you need. It is also the most comfortable bag I have ever used.

I also stacked my Amex 15% off code so its really cheap for the price. Highly recommend.

Where did you find the Amex code? That might be what puts me over the fence. When you see nearly everyone using something--it's got to be really good. Thank you for posting!

why is everybody discussing if this is fit for carry on? Shouldn't the question be does it fit to be a personal item? I want to carry a personal item plus carry on which is my normal size 20 inch suitcase, So does this qualify for a personal item?

That one is the Trail 40, but close enough! I think I remember a REI salesperson saying they were pretty close bags with some minor feature changes

If empty, it shouldn't be an issue. ime, most airlines don't really look at backpacks as 'luggage' unless they look the same size. My Ozark Trail has gotten the 'you're going to need to gate check that' many times, but it always fits in the smaller planes and I've never had to gate check it. With nothing in it, I would easily be able to stuff it under the seat in front, but it would have to roll up a bit.

The problem is the frame sticks out too far to fit fully under the seat in front of you. There's no squashing the frame.

I have the Fairview. Great bag. Took it to NZ and AUS then Finland, one-bagging. The hip belt is great. I could put it on as taught by REI and the weight was fully supported on my hips. Shoulders got a rest. Laptop compartment I use for my iPad or papers. It's hard to access when packed full. The frame is too tall to put under the seat in front of you and not be in the foot space. Flight attendants can and will make you correct that. Note, the 40l with 15l matching bag and the 55l are slightly different. Double check the features if you want 55l total.

You'd be surprised what you can step on and get away with. Worse case, if it's empty you can just put it up.

How does this compare to the nomatic travel pack 40l? Looking for an expandable backpack, lightweight that I can sneak in as a personal item. TIA
