I have zooz switches and like them.

The "old timey senior fan club" remark is probably because z wave is a dying protocol. That said, my experience (having come to z wave from Wi-Fi), is that the devices (so far) are much more reliable than my Wi-Fi devices, and it's allowed me to ditch a lot of noisy Wi-Fi clients (which may have contributed to my reliability problem). All Zwave is local network only by design, no silly round trips through some remote server, no silly apps constantly shoving ads in your face.

I haven't used a ton of z wave brands but the zooz stuff has been great. My experience has been that it supports all the latest zwave stuff, supporting s2 security and smart start out of the box.

Smartest house seems to basically be the primary zooz vendor. I'm not a fan of the $100 free ship minimum, but these sale prices are decent for zwave stuff. I have been waiting for the zen37 to drop back down (I think historical low is somewhere around $17) to buy a handful to use as a dimmer remote.

That said, if you don't know what zwave stuff is already you probably don't want it.

I use a Hubitat C-7 with Home assistant to function as my radio for z-wave and zigbee. A year or so ago some company was clearing out thousands of c-7s for $10/each, so I picked up a couple. They're only sort of stable, I have a plugin that reboots mine once a week.

I have a fair number of zooz devices. They're ok, they feel sort of cheap compared to innovelli, but they're also half the price. The remotes and scene controllers are fantastic though.

People have been saying z-wave is dying for a long long time. First zigbee was killing it, but then we realized that interoperability with zigbee sucked and that companies like Aqara were advertising zigbee, but intentionally making it incompatible. Then it was WiFi devices, clogging up routers and spying on you. Then they said Matter & Thread would kill z-wave, but the the roll out of those products has been some wear between slow and totally stalled.

So here we are. Home automation still sucks, and z-wave is still sorta the best of the worst.

Morning team - I'm looking to create a smart home and have no idea where to start. Don't throw any shade but I do have Alexa throughout the house, basement and garage... using her to automate lights, thermostat, cameras and vacuum.I want to get smarter though and add other routines, an e-diaplay, etc. Is there a repository or site that will walk someone like me through where to start, pros/cons, what computer skills do I need... all of it???? Thanks in advance.!

Mediocre. If you even dare sniff any criticism of "The Smartest House," the nursing home sicks their dogs on you and goes to battle, defending their honor. You'll notice that free shipping starts at $59 (usually $99), but we're supposed to bend over and say thanks. Also, lots of Homeseer and other outdated holdouts here, ignoring that SmartThings dominates the space almost completely.

I recommend buying Third Reality Zigbee products on Amazon.
My Third Reality buttons have been great, however Third Reality motion sensors absolutely suck. Bought 4, all 4 have ghost movement issues. Tested them in a box as well just to rule out any lights/shadows triggering it, same random ghost movement issues. Smartthings didn't trigger when ThirdReality ones did.

Though I do like that ThirdReality stuff I have doesn't use button cell batteries. d

I like Home Assistant, it will integrate with your existing Alexa stuff and let you add more. I use zwave, I am not sure if I would recommend it if you are starting new. It is good but as mentioned up thread it is losing popularity. May want to look into the device ecosystems of other protocols. That said zooz is relatively cheap and works well.

No Titan actuator on the 4th of July sale?! Wow, bummer.

I missed last year's BF sale and was waiting for it to go back to $120-130 since then. Welp.

I have Zooz switches around my house - I spent a few months in 2022 when we moved in slowly replacing dumb switches with Zwave stuff.

I don't really comment on it anywhere ever, because the Z-Wave ecosystem mostly just works, once properly set up, so there's very little I can share. Sadly, can't say it about most of Zigbee stuff I tried vomit

There were some issues with my setup over these years, but most of them were either because of bad equipment choices on my end (i.e. running HA on RPi with a bad SD card, lesson learned) or because of some strange software glitches after HA breaking updates.

My only regret is that I was buying stuff gradually and missed some good prices on a few things (like Titan actuators) that I still miss.

I tested Zooz and Innovelli switches. Eventually I filled my house with Zooz products. They have been great. Using Zooz Z-wave stick, dimmers, double switches. remote switches, scene selector and plugs. So far their products have felt superior to my research and trial of other products.

That being said unless the discount is at checkout. I'm not seeing how this is different from their normal pricing.

I filled my house with all-Inovelli switches about 6 years ago and have been slowly replacing them with Zooz. Although Inovelli looks and feels nicer, I've found the Zooz to be more reliable.

If it helps:
I have several Zooz switches and they have been *mostly great. Also the customer support is fantastic (supporting my own mistakes)

*I had some connectivity issues with 3 700 series switches while connected to a 500 series USB stick. The connectivity issues decreased when I upgraded to a 800 LR stick, but there are still occasional drops. I have no issues with my 500 and 800 series devices (including those from other vendors).

Also I thought I'd mention that the physical button feels much better on the zen77 800 series than on my older 500 series.

I have 5-10 of their devices. I like them, but I find them really chatty. I think they are bogging down my Hubitat.

Gonna give this one a pass. I got several Smart Plug ZEN04 800LR in Sept 2024 for $16.95. Going for $21.25 now. I'll see how low it goes when they try and reach sale #s at the end of the year. Good stuff though.
Fwiw, their sales prices aren't constant. Certain devices hit different price points at different sales. There is some probability that a future sale might have it for 17 or 19 or whatever. Of course, you have to wait and hope. And who knows what the FS level will be. But I've watched their sales (and purchased) for years and can guarantee the sales prices often go lower or higher with no monotonic pattern

That's not my experience, sorry to hear that. I have two in different locations (beneath counter, in hallway) and both trigger SmartThings instantly and reliably. I sit next to one of them in the same room and would know about invalid triggers by seeing it happen.

Indeed, the big distinction of Third Reality products is using AAAs instead of coin cells that also die quicker; I've been burned by other HA products that way.

Yeah, everyone knows Matter is the future. Except for those of us who live in the present and need a solution for the present, Matter is still largely disappointing.

Mixing z-wave and Smart Things in the same comparision, shows you don't really know what you are talking about.
