Can I ask a tax question here? Can gains from ETFs be offset with a realized loss from disposing (sale) of a stock?

Hi, say for example i bought a stock at 1000 a share. i sell it at $600 so I have a $400 loss.
i bought an ETF for 300 and it appreciated to 800, i sell it for a gain of +500S.
come tax season, I report capital gains of $500, subject to taxes.
Can I reduce the $500 by $400 (the loss) from the stock situation and report $100 of gains instead of $500?
I ask because stuff like dividend and interest income cannot be reduced by stock losses...
do stock losses only get applied to stocks, and etf gains can only be offset with etf losses?
