I used to work for Circuit City, and generally speaking when stores go out of business heir inventory gets bought out by liquidators who look to flip the stuff for a profit. They post up 20%, 30%, 40% off signs everywhere so people think they're getting a deal but they just jack up prices. They could've gotten better deals before we went out of business

When the LA riots were going on, everybody was looting a Circuit City and they had it on live tv. These guys came out of the store with a brand new big screen tv (back when they were 3 or 4 thousand dollars) and they immediately got held up at gunpoint and had to load it into the other guy's truck and then he took off with the tv. It was the funniest thing that I've ever seen.

man, that must have been a wild time to live through. I was still a kid then. I feel bad for those Circuit City employees who definitely werent paid enough to deal with that or the aftermath

It wasn't much fun to be in Los Angeles between 1991 (Rodney King) and 1995 (OJ). The thing that I remember the most are the aftershocks after the 1994 earthquake. There were 3000 aftershocks measuring 1.5 or greater in the first 3 weeks after the earthquake and 48 aftershocks measuring between 4 and 5 in the 9 months after the earthquake. You'd walk into a store and all of the sudden everything would start shaking and stuff would fly all over the place and you'd go OMG we're going to die. There was no way to know if it was an aftershock or another big one. An aftershock stops when things start to get too crazy but a big one goes on well beyond that point to where you think that the ground is going to split open and everything will fall in. Even when the bad shaking stops, there are still little shakes and you think it can start up again. It's not anything that you can get used to. It always freaks you out. It would've been a great time to work at Circuit City. Everybody had their insurance checks and needed to get new home entertainment gear to replace what was destroyed by the earthquake. Some people had to replace things multiple times. It really was crazy.
