If you plan to use it externally, I see no reason to swap it into a different enclosure. The SATA-USB bridge WD historically used in these is one of the best I've seen. You can shuck the drive (or put it in a different enclosure) without data loss. However, subsequently putting it back into the WD enclosure can damage the backup GPT (partition table) header. Windows doesn't seem to care about this (and may even silently fix it) but Linux tends to throw a fit (but it can be manually repaired there too).

Easystore is the name Best Buy uses exclusively for their WD hard drives

Elements is the WD common name sold everywhere else

BB does this so it doesn't have to price match, different branding, different part numbers

Shockable?
wouldn't be good for the electronics controlling the drive but you could. Looks like it also can be shucked.

The Elements version is the same price direct from Western Digital also. They offer an extra year of warranty.

Can these still be removed and used as regular storage drives? Are they still WD reds in there?

I've had a WD MyBook fail many years ago and that sucked. I primarily want to use for just backup and archive of files (photos, data, etc.). It won't see a lot of use and will be connected intermittently to a laptop and not a desktop. Is it better to have this or a portable external in that case?

There is absolutely no functional difference between the two. There are cosmetic differences, and the product lines are marketed, distributed, and sold differently. The hardware is absolutely the same. You may be thinking of the difference between EasyStore/Elements and MyBook.
Actually, the hardware is not the same. They may contain the same HD but the SATA-USB bridge is different. Some people seem to prefer the version used in the EasyStore. And yes, the MyBook is even more different.

I have only one warning about these Easystore platter based drives. They are very top heavy and have a high center of gravity and a small narrow footprint. Thus they tip over very easily. I had one simply tip over and the drive totally crapped out as a result losing all my data. Not very reassuring when you're using these for a backup drive. Just make sure you take precautions to stabilize it from tipping over. The drives are great until they fall over.

Expect to have to use the "tape trick", but otherwise I haven't heard it wasn't.

Not true.

Elements have a physical power button which you need to press to turn on everytime the unit starts. Easystore does not.

Although lot of recent review for elements says that the power button is non-functional.

But 14TB is too less of space these days for many.
