If you plan to use it externally, I see no reason to swap it into a different enclosure. The SATA-USB bridge WD historically used in these is one of the best I've seen. You can shuck the drive (or put it in a different enclosure) without data loss. However, subsequently putting it back into the WD enclosure can damage the backup GPT (partition table) header. Windows doesn't seem to care about this (and may even silently fix it) but Linux tends to throw a fit (but it can be manually repaired there too).

Easystore is the name Best Buy uses exclusively for their WD hard drives

Elements is the WD common name sold everywhere else

BB does this so it doesn't have to price match, different branding, different part numbers

Thanks for this reply! I wasn't going to do SSD just because I heard it has to be powered up occasionally (easy enough I guess), and this would really just be for archiving work and fam photo/movie files that would potentially go months without a write. Only large files would be some go pro videos that might approach a few GB, but it's really quantity of files and 2-5 TB should be sufficient.

The "desktop" version has 3.5" hdd and requires an external 12v power supply (which is included). The "portable" version houses a 2.5" drive and is powered by the same USB data cable, no external power required. External SSD drives can be 2.5" or M.2 form factor and usually don't require extra power other than that provided by the USB cable.

There is no functional difference. Cite any reliable source that describes a functional difference. Although lot of recent review for elements says that the power button is non-functional.
The power button does nothing. I've had mine for five days now, through several power cycles, and have not touched the power button.
