Is RAID necessary? I want to use this mostly for media that I'm not worried about losing but a small subset of the data would be personal photos and documents I'd like to keep backups of. What's the best approach?

i back up like 6TB to a non-raided disk, and have a copy sitting on Backblaze and google cloud glacier storage.

I have two of these DAS, the hybrid version. I use them for plex with my server. Work great.

But you can run Plex on a machine attached to it, of course. This thing is like a giant USB external drive, basically.

Well, but then again, you'll need a server. Better to just get a real NAS.

This device could be used for supplemental storage for your NAS. That was my view on it anyway.

I have one of these with 60TB connected to a mini-PC running OpenMediaVault, using OMV to rsync backups from two drives onto the other two. Lets me maintain control of my OS and server hardware, the copying method works just as well as a RAID would if not better for acting as a scheduled backup. Would recommend! Just get a mini PC with Intel QuickSync, any of the N150 machines going for ~$150 are perfect.

Or can be attached to an inexpensive mini PC being used as a server.

Can you share more (even dropping a couple links would be great). I was an OG windows home server user (the hp ex490 hardware was so sweet 15 years ago) but my storage scheme has been a sh*tshow since they killed it. I've got about 10 tb of essential photos, videos that I'd like to get into Immich, plus another 10 tb of other stuff that would be a hassle to lose, but not the end of the world. Plus probably 2-4 tb of all that are files that need to be de-duped (the beauty and evil of WHS was the way it made multiple copies of files and scattered them over 4 drives; it worked well in WHS, but it's not great when the system dies and you have to pull the data off four drives. Most of the stuff I care about is in the cloud, but I don't feel that's secure enough and would like a couple local copies (again, without all the dupes.)

TIA!

How does it do for multiple streams or transcoding? I have seen conflicting reports on whether it is too laggy, wondering if an N100/N150 machine is good enough or if something like an M1 or M2 Mac mini for not much more would be good.
