It is, there are kits. It will void the warranty and you should at least be somewhat comfortable being gentle and taking apart something that doesn't make it easy for you to take it apart. There's a great video here describing the process: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zJC73hm3VM4

Just wanted to chime in; it might not be relevant to everyone here, but Costco Visa no longer has extended warranty, so if you want to go beyond the two years, youll have to use a different card. It is generally one extra year for most of the visas, but (ironically), alot of other citi cards give you two extra years!

256 GB hard drive... WHAT A JOKE. They are selling mini pc's with 1TB for less then $150. M4... GREAT, but come on... 256GB??? AND I bet there will be dozens of apple nerds who will state 256 is enough for most people and I say BULLSHIT.

I agree 100%. I will not accept less than 1TB. Don't people see that this an extortion to make us pay for cloud storage?

Is the ssd changeable?
Yes, BUT it is not designed to be and it isn't straightforward even if you have built a PC from off the shelf parts before. It's less complicated than a iPhone screen or battery swap, but it does require you to have a second Mac available and a few inexpensive tools.
Here is an iFixit video that goes through the whole process: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O2tzy6T3Gm0, and this link breaks down the process overall in text https://expandmacmini.com/apple-c...ion-guide/

Some folks have reported poor throughput on the supplied internal SSD on these units and saw improved performance by replacing with a higher quality NVME (Samsung 990 Pro). It could be more practical but slightly more expensive to invest in pairing a Thunderbolt 4 enclosure with a good NVMe SSD, tho you might save a bit by not having to buy the smaller profile SSD. Thunderbolt 5 enclosures exist, but there's none that I've seen at a price that makes me curious enough to try.

Extortion? You can configure it you have whatever amount of storage you'd like. You also have a good selection of thunderbolt, usb, and network attached storage options available to you these days too.

Bunch of drama llamas...

Can this run LLMs well? Compared to Mac Pro M3 or M4
For running local LLMs the criteria that seems to be important is memory bandwidth, gpu cores, and amount of ram. For macs, that generally means it's more about the cpu class (ultra, max, pro, base) rather than the generation (m1, m2, m3, m4), eg ultra has generally higher memory bandwidth, more gpu cores, and (usually) more memory than max, and max more than pro, etc. Some useful numbers (altho note this is older data and doesn't reflect MLX model performance):

https://github.com/ggml-org/llama...sions/4167

So eg an older M1, M2, M3 max or ultra would be generally preferred for local LLMs over an M4 base or M4 pro, for example the recent M2 max 32gb mac studio on amazon for $899 would probably be better suited for local LLM than an m4 mini:

It's this mindset that allow the belief that one must take a car to their dealership for an oil change to remain under warranty, or belief in "Warranty Void if Broken" stickers (and similar nonsense) to prevail. I'd encourage you to educate yourself and challenge any (actual, not hypothetical) decisions you see or hear about from others. I'd encourage you to read facts on the real world: https://consumer.ftc.gov/consumer...ee%20underIn case anyone is interested in what Apple actually writes (rather than, say, what AI says), here are some facts: https://www.apple.com/legal/warra...0BREACHED?Case in point: Important: Do not open the Apple Product. Opening the Apple Product may cause damage that is not covered by this Warranty. Only Apple or an AASP should perform service on this Apple Product.Note that at no point is the phrase uttered that the warranty is automatically voided, because that would be illegal and Apple knows it. And Apple can say who they think "should" or "should not" do work on something all they like; it carries zero weight. But don't let facts get in the way of your beliefs...
Thanks. I won a $5 bet from a buddy, knew you couldn't resist continuing.

Your response, with complete lack of evidence and facts, is noted. While you and your buddy are reading this, you should go read up on Magnuson Moss and US law to see how warranty law works. You'd have something smart to share with your buddy...
