I think eSim functionality would also be locked until the phone itself is unlocked. I'm sure someone will jump in momentarily and correct my gentle if I'm wrong about this
You are correct. Esim is also locked for 12 month

Not clear from your post, but Metro requires going into their app and using the change devices, entering the new devices IMEI and then verifying you'll be using the same SIM ICCID or entering the replacement SIM ICCID, if you're just taking the sim out of one phone and popping it into another that could be the cause. It's an added security measure intended so that if you lose your phone you don't end up with someone able receive all your account recovery text. These companies T-Mobile and Metro deal with all types of sophisticated number/account hijacking scams and the liability that goes along with it.
I did it the proper way, through the app onto their website now, the whole process has been bastardized with extra hoops

Pretty sure it doesn't work even woth TMobile sim or other Tmobile MVMO Sim.

Couple years ago, of course Frontpage of slickdeal, I got Samsung A54 5G phone free with one month service from MetroPCS and Mint Mobile sim I had would mot work. Put the phone in the drawer and it did auto unlocked after tedious 1 year after (least it unlocked automatically, no calling to MetroPCS).

And TMobile has gotten worse with sim card swapping on their MVNO network.
A couple years ago, it was only 6 months for a metro phone to unlock. I got the Metro Samsung Galaxy A54 and the Motorola G Stylus 5G 2022.

So a year of gathering dust. or am I missing something?
And hoping it'll unlock. Then hoping it'll work with your sim.

I last bought a Metro phone when the unlock policy was 6 months after activation and didn't have any issue unlocking then. With the 12 month unlock policy now, have there been confirmations that Metro phones really do get automatically unlocked after 12 months after just 1 month of paid service?

The single most important question that I believe many might have is the need for continuous service beyond month 1 to be eligible for unlock. As there are mixed responses across metro threads, it would be great if someone can confirm if the device indeed got unlocked with just one month of paid service or paying at 11th month to have an active service for system to unlock at 12th month completion . If this new unlock policy was enforced on or after August 2024, we would have to wait for someone to pass the one year mark to share their experiences.

Would I be able to get this phone with the 1 month plan, then cancel the plan and put the phone on an existing grandfathered in unlimited family plan from Metro?

Yes. Simplest way, that doesn't involve the need to call support is after activating the new phone login to your myMetro app for the new account and find the option to change devices. Then move the number to any old phone you have lying around. This frees up the connection between the new phone and an existing account. It can then be used on any existing account. Just do the same on your grandfathered plan. Login to the app and change device to the Stylus 2025

Even when the policy was 180-days after activation I had never had an issue only paying for 1-month of service and all of my devices were unlocked automatically without trouble. There have been no changes to the policy other than an extension of time so I 100% believe there should be no issues with a 355-day after activation policy.
