The previous model Midea 12,000 BTU 3-in-1 portable AC without inverter tech has the EnergyGuide estimated yearly energy cost of $123 with a 7.9 efficiency ratio. This model currently sold at Costco is listed at $68/year, 13.8 efficiency ratio.

EDIT: thanks to a couple people that have pointed this out, but this particular model does not have the heat pump. The ones that I have does and the model numbers are pretty similar, my apologies. These are still pretty good units though.

This is a great unit for those who are curious. Also a great price for a dual hose, inverter, heat pump unit. I didn't one of these to the lobby of our business to help in the summer and winter from being so cold in there, and it runs like a top. Is also very quiet compared to other portable units.

But if you know how to read, the majority of those bad reviews have to do with units that came damaged, probably during shipping.

Or they're complaining about stuff like water drainage issues, which is due to the humidity of the places they chose to live in.

Or "I Had to hire a contractor to carry it up the stairs and install it." That's not Midea or Costco's fault.

I bought this model last year (factory reconditioned) and have used it in my garage. It works great, the app is great. Very happy with it.

does the invertor tech not help in this regard?
I got one of these refurbished for $199.99 from Walmart about a month ago. Our wiring isn't the greatest and I have problems running my computer while gaming and a higher than 5000 BTU air conditioner on the same circuit. When I first got it I tried playing my computer after I first turned on this portable unit and unfortunately it blew the breaker. I tried again later after the air conditioner had been running for awhile and it was cooled down and haven't had a problem since so the inverter is definitely using less power after it reaches the set temp.
I'm a big fan of this AC for similar reasons, last summer had a 6K BTU window AC that tripped the living room breaker frequently / that breaker trips easily in general, have been running this Midea 12K all summer and haven't had the breaker trip once.

These are great - don't buy any portable unit that doesn't have an inverter (very few do). My understanding is they don't match dedicated window units, but they get as close as possible. I have 4 portable ACs (3 without inverters and then one). This is the ONLY one i use regularly. The rest are spot use to cool rooms before turning on fans. I just leave the invertor one on overnight as it is much more efficient and quiet.

Tons of 1 star review on costco's site. Mostly poor quality related. No thanks!

@nottrollin, Thanks for pointing this out. I've been watching this unit for a couple months and that's exactly what I got from the reviews.

Window A/Cs are always the better pick versus portable A/Cs: more efficient, quieter, and don't take up space in your room. Go for a window A/C if you can
window units always blow mold since the condensers are made to hold water to cool off.

I use mine about 11pm-8-am in San Diego and I believe my bills only went up $20-$40/mo. Granted, the inside air is 80 F, the outside air is 68 F, and I'm cooling to 70 F. It definitely runs the compressor but the amount of work it has to do is probably pretty minimal.
Why not just open the window in that case?

I understand the risks of having an 80 pound portable A/C shipped to the house. I ordered one from a Woot deal posted here earlier.

This is what the Amazon driver left outside my door and ran......without knocking.

The only reason to get a portable AC unit is if you need this style of unit. A conventional reason is having the wrong type of window for a window unit (eg, horizontal windows). Often you can work around those types of issues but for folks who aren't DIY handy this is frequently the only easily accessible option.

If you do need this type of AC unit, the double hose is critical to having even moderately acceptable performance. The nice thing about this is it's a "double hose" built into one hose. Makes hookup marginally easier than dealing with two distinct hoses, while still having the efficiency gain of being able to vent hot air outside the air conditioned space.

"Portable" is what is used to define these types of units but they aren't portable in the conventional sense. Since you need an external hose venting outside, it's not easily portable. Just portable relative to an in-window unit.

For smart functionality, it's cool[1] that this supports matter. This means even if they stop supporting cloud functionality (which will probably happen before the product dies) smart functionality remains possible for local control.

Anyone know the wattage use at low med and high? Does this use more watts compared to a 12k mini split with 21 seer rating?
I bought one this weekend and on a Tapo energy monitoring plug, it show about 270W in low mode with compressor running (cool mode).

Kinda misleading, but I see your point. All I know is that after using this unit last year, between June - October, my bills went from $143/mo to $297-336/mo. We used the unit between 9pm - 2am and 12pm - 4pm.
I'm in San Diego also and you really just need to put a fan next to an open door/window in your bedroom and the cool night air will keep you cool MUCH cheaper than running AC while you sleep. I do it every night. As we all know, there are nights during monsoon time or extremes when overnight is not cool and an AC is good for that but most of the time, it's low 70's at night in the summer, perfect temp for sleeping.

I bought one. Just installed it and since the tiny room it's in is off the garage (used to be a small shop but now it's an office) and had only one window that is over a desk so I cannot run the exhaust out the window. So, I cut a hole in the drywall and vented it out into the garage (we usually have the garage door partially open for ventilation anyways).

My question is regarding the dual hose. It seems the round part is the hot exhaust air and the other part is the intake? If so, it would seem the intake is just sucking the hot exhaust air back in! I'm going to buy some exhaust vents to mount on the garage side of the wall that will vent the hot exhaust air DOWN, and then the intake air part will be just ambient garage temp air.

It's too bad these things don't have a recirculation mode so I'm not having to cool down hot in-take air...like my car, just keep the already cool air cool...

We covered this pretty extensively in another thread. I ran tests myself with my ecoflow. High ran about 1150-1300 watts. Medium was in the 700-800 range. Low was about 250-350. When it was in the 90s outside. Low was running on the higher end 330-350 range. I was very curious about this due to wanting to know it's efficiency in a power outage which is primarily why I bought it. I might need to be stingy on watts in that type of scenario.
