Atsc 3 will probably be "skipped". Basically, 4 will come out before 3 is everywhere.
It's just not consumer friendly. They have to fix it.
Or it will all be replaced by 5g TV. So many potential issues including the current proposals for changes in local tv station ownership rules. Of course, Everything gets better with consolidation.
I used Tablo with a Fire TV stick, one of the few media streamers that lets you watch in-progress recordings from the beginning of the recording. So if you start playing a recording an hour after it began and it has more time to record, you won't have thumbnails available yet. Depending on the show this could be a problem. For an awards show, no big deal but for sports, a big hassle if you just want to see key plays.
So if you know you want the thumbnails you can't watch a long show for up to 30 minutes sometimes after it ends... to give Tablo time to create thumbnails.
Too bad AMZN dropped their DVR as it works pretty well.
No ATSC 3.0 👎🏻
ATSC 3.0 is 4k resolution and that is 16 times more resolution than 720p OTA. It will eat up a ton of storage. It doesn't make sense. 4k is way too demanding in recording. With 720p OTA broadcasting, one can record far more TV shows. A bluray disk is like 1080p and that used like 50GB. Imagine 4k storage? Think of 4k recording a phone. With 4k, it is 4x more pixels than 1080p.
Cons?
Higher demands: Requires more processing power, bandwidth, and storage space than 720p content.
Overkill on small screens: The added detail may not be perceptible on a 720p display, and 4K content will be downscaled, potentially causing some clarity loss.

Basic rundown of Tablo... it allows you to use an antenna to get all the local channels (like we used to before cable/satellite). In some areas there are dozens and dozens of over the air channels. Tablo is your interface to those channels and it allows you to Record (like the DVR on you satellite dish).
The number of tuners determines how many channels you can watch and record at the same time. what does that mean? If you want to record a show on ABC at 7pm while watching a show "live" on NBC also at 7PM then 2 tuners will work great for you. BUT if you also want to record some old movie on CBS during that same time, you are going to need to 4 tuner model Tablo. That would be using 3 of the 4 tuners at the same time... you could also record one MORE show during that same time with a 4 model tuner.
Can I watch a recorded show AND record other shows at the same time? Yep. up to 2 of or 4 shows can be recorded while watching a recorded show(depending on if you have a 2 or 4 tuner Tablo).
I love my Tablo and did have to replace my original until after about 6 years. It had a hardware issue and stopped functioning (I believe that was a first Gen Tablo). I upgraded to the current Gen at the time and haven't had any issues since. LOVE my Tablo.

Are there any 4k channels?
:
I heard that there are some ATSC 3.0 channels around me but I don't have any TV with that tuner to know what channels.
Last time I checked was a year ago, and there were some test stations. It sounded like 4k broadcasts aren't happening until atsc 1 is gone, and stations were more interested in having more channels.

The amount of storage it would take for 4K downloading compared to 720p recording would be way too much and really unnecessary. Too much processing power needed for a recording device and plus a really strong internet which I don't have.
